Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position:

Support technology development in the telecommunications field by using engineering principles to design, build, & evaluate prototype products. Likely areas of focus will be fiber optic connectors and enclosures that protect connection points. Technologies employed include: plastic injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, rapid prototyping, & optical design. Actively engage with cross-functional project teams to solve problems efficiently and effectively with the objective of meeting project requirements. Lead small projects.

Responsibilities:

  • 2D & 3D CAD Design of new components and assemblies

  • Prototyping & evaluation of new components and assemblies

  • Coordinate, plan, and lead experiments in support of assigned projects. Draw on engineering principles from within the candidate’s field of study to analyze experiment results, using statistical tools as appropriate.

  • Actively engage within the project team and across project boundaries as needed to achieve objectives. Willingness to share ideas with the team is important, as is willingness to take direction and feedback from team members and technical experts.

  • Lead projects of limited scope consistent with length of assignment.

  • Manage priorities and timeline to achieve objectives in allotted time.

  • Prepare oral and written reports to summarize test results and key conclusions for technical audiences including Development, Engineering, and Operations.

Education and Experience:

  • Enrolled in BS or MS program in engineering discipline (Mechanical or Industrial)

  • Course work completed to include first and second year engineering studies.

  • GPA of 3.0 or above.

Required Skills:

  • CAD Design Software

  • Creativity in approach to solutions, experimental design, and results analysis.

  • Ability to work with hands to build prototype products, test systems, etc.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information

  • Results-oriented

  • Computer literate in MS Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Desired Skills:

  • Experience using Creo or Unigraphics NX CAD software.

  • “Hands-on” laboratory experience using lathe, mill, and assorted hand tools

  • Experience with PLM Software such as Windchill or eNovia.

  • Relevant work/class experience.

Hours of work / work schedule / flex-time:

  • 40hrs/week - 8a-5p - Must be flexible.

​The range for this position is $1,635.00 - $3,185.00 biweekly. Starting pay for the successful applicant is prescribed based on geographic location, nature of position, and year in school.
