Shire Director, Risk Management in Bannockburn, Illinois

This position will serve as the Director, Risk Management for the Global Compliance and Risk Management (GCRM) team. The successful candidate will serve as an integral risk management resource for GCRM, and is also expected to operate as an internal risk counselor to the organization – engaging with, and providing quality services to, various senior global stakeholders. The candidate will focus on the design, development and implementation of global risk management and continuity program for Shire. The candidate will have a strong knowledge of prevailing global risk management practices and procedures. The candidate will be expected to facilitate, improve, and refine both programs to proactively protect Shire’s strategic goals, financial strength, and reputation. The candidate is further expected to collaborate closely with, and support other areas, within GCRM.

Key Responsibilities:

Global Risk Management

  • Responsibilities for the Global Risk Management Program include:

  • Maintain and refine as appropriate the governance model, including policies and standards

  • Maintain the Risk Universe

  • Calibrate the Risk Appetite Model

  • Align risk with strategy and performance

  • Monitor principal and tier II risks within the Organization’s products, regions and functions

  • Ensure the Global Risk Management program is in compliance with applicable regulations (e.g., UK Corporate Governance Code)

  • Continue to innovate risk reporting (e.g., trending, risk analytics, use of Key Risk Indicators etc.)

  • Periodically review the effectiveness of the Global Risk Management program (as required by the UK Corporate Governance Code), and other risk and compliance areas

  • Provide leadership, guidance and support to corporate, business unit, and functional levels on highly complex risk issues, including risk assessment, risk mitigation, trend analysis and prevailing practice recommendations

  • Participates in various Committees (e.g. Assurance Forum etc.) at the corporate, business unit, and/or functional level, and provides input as required

  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of Company's businesses supported and knowledge of the broader business impact.

  • Conduct the bi-annual Global Risk Assessment (GRA)

  • Develop procedures to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor enterprise risks

  • Execute an efficient GRA according to the methodology outlined in the governance model

  • Prepare and deliver precise, accurate, and timely risk reports to the Chief Compliance and Risk Officer, Executive Committee (ExCo) and the Audit, Compliance, and Risk Committee (ACR)

  • Integrate with:

  • Internal Audit: develop procedures to align global risk management with Internal Audit planning and review

  • Risk Governance : support the various global boards in exercising their risk governance responsibilities (e.g., Shire PLC, SIG/SORD etc.)

  • Program Management: customize the Global Risk Management approach for use by Program Managers in various franchises

  • Corporate Security: develop procedures to align risk management information with corporate security (e.g., geopolitical risk etc.)

  • Insurance: align risk appetite with various loss prevention and risk transfer protocols

  • Assist in Principal Risk Mitigation

  • Participate in risk mitigation efforts for priority principal risk areas

  • Conduct Principal Risk Deep Dives

  • Develop a principal risk deep dive approach

  • Conduct deep dives for priority principal risks

  • Prepare for Risk Technology

  • Periodically review the potential for leveraging risk technology (e.g., Archer) in the long term

  • Collaborate with IT in leading the implementation of such technology, as required

  • Other GCRM Support

  • Supervise and provide on-going mentoring/career development to junior GCRM associates

Business Continuity Management

  • Build and improve the BCM Program:

  • Maintain the BCM Policy and Standards

  • Ensure the BCM Program supports the strategic imperatives of the Organization

  • Conduct periodic Business Impact Analyses

  • Facilitate the Development of Business Continuity Plans for priority areas

  • Facilitate table top testing of priority areas

  • Integrate BCM with:

  • IT Disaster Recovery Planning

  • Emergency Action Planning

  • Insurance

  • EHS

  • Take the lead in collaborating with IT, Communications, Supply Chain, Legal, and HR in developing and testing a Crisis Management Capability

  • Prepare simulations (.e.g., cyberattacks) and practice our cross functional response

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Advanced degree or professional certification with emphasis in Business Administration/Finance, Law, Information Technology

  • Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 10 years risk related business experience preferred

  • Experience with business functions, such as compliance, legal, IT, and finance

  • Significant experience in leading large, transformational, global risk-related initiatives

  • Project management experience including planning, managing project tasks, issues, risks, milestones, and deadlines; ensuring quality, and developing process improvement

  • Experience in presenting to executive management and/or the board of directors

  • Familiarity with broad range of pharmaceutical compliance risk areas

  • Demonstrated ability to operate independently and build robust professional networks
