Job Description

The Director of Field Medical Excellence is responsible for establishing and implementing Regional Medical excellence and scientific communication initiatives across the global field medical teams to drive alignment and consistency with the organization’s strategic imperatives. Establishes and implements field standards and best practices, enhancement of current systems/processes such as the CRM/VEEVA, insights gathering, scientific and clinical training curriculum, benchmarking, evaluation, and assessment of field medical initiatives and performance.

Essential Functions

  • Leads the identification, development, and implementation of field medical affairs standards and best practices (systems and processes) across the field medical teams (i.e., congress planning, pre-call planning, grant review, territory planning, etc.) to ensure consistency across the function.

  • Identifies and establishes field medical capabilities that constitute exceptional Clinical Specialists (CS)/Clinical Specialist Liaisons (CSLs)/Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs) performance in line with current field trends and stakeholder expectations (benchmarking).

  • Assists the field medical leadership team in utilizing training resources to ensure ongoing professional development.

  • Provides ongoing assessment of training needs, competencies, skills, effectiveness and progress toward strategic objectives and team goals.

  • Responsible for coordinating with Field Directors for the planning, implementation and support of ongoing scientific training and education to align with robust scientific discussions with Medical Experts.

  • Responsible for standardizing field medical onboarding

  • Partners with the leadership team to identify challenges that the field medical personnel face in the external environment and seek to develop innovative solutions. Assist in the identification of ongoing skills training needs to ensure exceptional individual and team performance.

  • Ensures standardization of Field Medical reporting and KPI’s; assess and propose innovative metrics to measure field medical effectiveness.

  • Drives the implementation of Field Medical Excellence (FME) Framework and associated processes— incorporating new technologies and tools that support.

  • Leads discussions, development and evaluations of appropriate, efficient and effective medical systems, tools and processes (e.g., Veeva Vault, CRM).

  • Acts as a liaison with Medical Affairs teams and provide medical and scientific input into the strategy and development of field medical resources across field medical teams prn (e.g., slides, FAQs, field medical surveys).

  • Develop and implement high-quality standardized processes across field medical teams.

  • Represent regional field medical teams as required and contribute to TA strategy alignments. Provide active contribution at local key internal meetings including integrated strategy meetings.

  • Ensures compliance of processes and activities with internal and external policies (e.g., Medical Affairs Field Interactions implementing procedures, industry codes).

Minimum Requirements

  • PharmD, PhD or MD, or equivalent advanced degree in health care

  • 10+ years in the pharma/biotech industry with pre-launch and product launch experience in a global capacity

  • Proven ability to interpret, communicate and implement medical/scientific strategies using systems, tools and processes (e.g., Veeva Vault, CRM) and work in a cross functional environment

  • Demonstrated capabilities for a field based medical role and proven competency at the principal CS/CSL/MSL level

  • Proven ability to coach scientific/medical personnel at all skill and knowledge levels

  • Strong leadership/emotional intelligence, personal integrity and demonstrated customer focus

  • Excellent interpersonal communication, negotiation, project management, and presentation skills

  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and work effectively on multi-functional teams in a constantly changing environment and motivate others to do the same

  • Clear understanding of internal/external ethical guidelines relevant to the pharmaceutical industry

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the drug development process, medical affairs, patient safety and commercial activities

  • Self-motivated, action oriented and results oriented

Preferences:

  • HEOR/Managed care experience highly preferred.

Organizational Relationship/Scope:

Reports to the Executive Director Regional Medical Affairs; works cross functionally with Field Medical, Compliance, Commercial and other R&D functions.

Working Conditions:

Position is Field Based; domestic travel up to 50% and some international travel is required.
