The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) welcomes applications for a full-time Arctic Research & Community Engagement Coordinator to provide coordination for advancing international Arctic research engagement and promoting safe working environments in remote field sites for researchers. The Arctic Research Engagement Coordinator will serve related projects/initiatives:

• As the engagement coordinator for U.S. participation in the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) (50% time).

• As an events and community-building coordinator for the Polar Science Early Career Community Office (PSECCO) (30% time).

• As a training facilitator and liaison to the field research team for the ADVANCEing FieldSafety (AFS) program (20% time).

This position will provide an exciting opportunity to connect across CIRES with the overall aim to advance collaborative and safe polar research.

Who We Are

At CIRES (https://cires.colorado.edu/) , more than 950 environmental science professionals work to understand the dynamic Earth system, including peoples relationship with the planet. CIRES has partnered with NOAA since 1967, and our areas of expertise include weather and climate, changes at Earths poles, air quality and atmospheric chemistry, water resources, solid Earth sciences, and more. Our vision is to be instrumental in ensuring a sustainable future environment by advancing scientific and societal understanding of the Earth system.

CIRES is home to several centers, including the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) (https://nsidc.org/home) and the Center for Education, Engagement and Evaluation (CEEE) (https://cires.colorado.edu/outreach/) . NSIDC conducts innovative research and provides open data to understand how the frozen parts of Earth affect the rest of the planet and impact society. Research studies and data are primarily focused on the snow, ice, glaciers, frozen ground and climate interactions that make up Earths cryosphere. Through a unique combination of data management and scientific research, NSIDC enables scientists, educators, students, journalists and many others to better understand the cryosphere, why its important and how its changing. CEEE consists of a team of 24 outreach, education and evaluation professionals. CIRES CEEE is a well-known and trusted partner for connecting CIRES science with educators, learners and communities. The team strives to make research data accessible, inspire environmental action and empower curiosity and scientific engagement. CEEE provides accessible, inclusive, high-quality environmental science curriculum and informal learning experiences, as well as meaningful professional and career development opportunities.

Within NSIDC and CEEE, three current initiatives will provide the work and direction for this position:

• The engagement office for U.S. participation in the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) (https://iasc.info/about) is based within NSIDC. IASC is a non-governmental, international scientific organization that encourages and facilitates cooperation in all aspects of Arctic research. NSIDC Scientist Matthew Druckenmiller is the Lead U.S. Delegate to IASC and, in close coordination with the U.S. Polar Research Board, oversees overall U.S. engagement and participation in IASC. A key milestone of this engagement will take place in March 2025 when the University of Colorado Boulder hosts Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW), which is the annual conference of IASC that provides opportunities for coordination, cooperation and collaboration between the various scientific organizations involved in Arctic research.

• The Polar Science Early Career Community Office (PSECCO) (https://psecco.org/) , based within CEEE, is a national organization focused on scientists who are studying Arctic and Antarctic regions who are early in their careers ranging from undergraduate-level to individuals who are 10-years past their last-earned degree. PSECCOs mission is focused on empowering and elevating polar early career scientists in their work, supporting vibrant community, providing opportunities and resources, offering skill trainings and working together towards more just, inclusive, diverse, equitable and accessible polar science environments.

• The ADVANCEing FieldSafety (AFS) program (https://fieldsafe.colorado.edu/) , based within CEEE, is a training program focused on supporting field research teams to develop a welcoming, inclusive and safe field environment.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Coordinating Engagement, Collaboration of Partners, and Meeting Planning

• Planning, co-organizing and facilitating meetings (small meetings, a large international meeting, and a medium-sized international early career event)

• Implementing shared file management

• Tracking priorities and milestones

Coordinating Communications

• Managing email communications

• Developing and managing social media presence

• Managing content development and updating websites

Training facilitation and Community Engagement Activities

• Planning virtual and in-person event logistics for PSECCO-related professional development-focused workshops, networking events, social planning, and more polar early career support-focused activities

• Planning and facilitating professional development workshops around AFS topics (content has been developed)

• Using knowledge of Arctic research and/or field research environments to support field research teams in their planning, logistics support, and development of field safety documents

What You Should Know

• Funding for this full-time position is available for 1.5 years. Continuation of this position beyond 1.5 years is contingent upon performance and the availability of funds.

• The hiring and administering of this position will be through the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

• This position will be physically based at the University of Colorado Boulder campus in Boulder, Colorado. Telework may be approved for 1-3 days per week.

• CIRES offers a generous compensation and benefits package.

• The annual hiring salary for this position ranges from $42,180 to $68,000. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.

• Some relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorados relocation processes and procedures.

What We Require

• Bachelors degree. Directly relevant experience may substitute for a bachelors degree on a year-per-year basis.
