Explain: The Digital Archives Coordinator in Special Collections and University Archives manages access, description, and preservation efforts of digitized and born-digital archival materials through daily operations of digital collections and the digital asset ecosystem.

 

The first date of consideration for this position is June 10, 2024.

 

Proposed Job Duties and Responsibilities:

 

• Oversee daily operations of SUU Digital Collections and digital asset management, including managing digitization, metadata, digital rights, and records management.

• Create and manage long-term access to digital objects/records and metadata for preserved digital content.

• Process digital and physical collections according to archival best practices and standards, including accession records, records retention, preservation, finding aids, and digital archives.

• Supervise, train, and evaluate student employees. Ensure that work adheres to current archival and digital standards. Coordinate and direct the service of volunteers.

• Provide reference and research services for the users of collections housed in Special Collections, including contact with patrons by phone, email, and in person.

• Collaboratively develops procedures and workflows for transferring digital records to Special Collections. Conducts outreach to various campus areas to manage records transfer.

• Create/maintain digital exhibits.

 

Qualifications

 

• Bachelor's degree.

• Knowledge of archives collection management systems, digital asset management systems, one or more metadata schemas, and digitization and/or digital preservation best practices (may be developed in service, but developing proficiency is a requirement of continued employment).

• Demonstrated analytical, organizational, planning, project management, and problem-solving skills, with proven success in independently prioritizing work.

• Research skills appropriate to providing a wide range of research advice and direction to patrons.

• Capable oral, written and interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with a diverse university community and user population; ability to work cooperatively in group and on individual projects.

• Proficiency with standard office computer applications (Word, Excel, pdf programs).

• Ability to perform the physical demands incident to routine work in an archival setting, including lifting boxes, climbing ladders, and tolerating dust. Must be able to lift 40 pounds to shoulder level.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

• Work experience in an archive or academic library special collections unit.

• Formal course work toward an ALA-accredited library degree, or Master's degree in a subject area, or an emphasis in archival management.

• ACA certification.

• Ability to teach complicated concepts to other people in an understandable and accessible manner.
