Head of US MSOL team

  • Serves as member of the US Medical Affairs Leadership Team (US MALT); establishes the vision, strategy and goals for the Medical Science and Outcomes (MSO) team.

  • Accountable for the management of the Medical Science and Outcomes team resources, including the hiring, development, training, performance evaluation and deployment of the Medical Science and Outcomes Liaison (MSOL) team.

  • Collaborate with the US Heads of Therapeutic Area Medical Strategy for all franchises to provide oversight of the development and implementation of the Shire clinical strategy across the portfolio of marketed products for Payers (commercial and government), Specialty Pharmacies (SPPs), Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs), Biologic Distributors (BDs) and Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs).

  • Contributes to the development of Therapeutic Area (TA) medical strategies by conducting ongoing analysis of the clinical market, healthcare reform and market access trends to ensure payer and provider perspectives are integrated into medical plans.

  • Collaborate with the leadership teams of the Commercial Accounts Field Leads (CAFLs), Government Accounts Field Leads (GAFLs), US Payer & Institutional Value Strategy Leads and other aligned partners to understand the need for medical support across all Managed Markets channels and ensure alignment of strategies.

  • Collaborate with the Heads of Health Economics, Outcomes Research and Epidemiology (HEORE) to provide input into HEORE TA strategy and leverage available HEORE tools and resources for the MSOL team.

  • Acts as a senior company representative interacting with external Managed Markets and Scientific Leaders

  • Accountable for the tactical implementation of the overarching MSO strategy in all therapeutic areas

  • Leads and manages change initiatives as needed to enable positive business outcomes

  • Troubleshoots particularly challenging opportunities/situations with MSO team members

  • Fosters a BRAVE culture by serving as a role model to foster personal accountability and ownership of individual and team success

  • Manages and oversees team financial resources

  • Accountable for direct reports compliance with all guidelines and policies

  • Foster an environment in which direct reports can be innovative and share ideas freely

  • Develops capabilities to enhance Medical Affairs engagement of Managed Markets clinical decision makers

  • Ensure MSO participation in Therapeutic Area Medical Strategy teams to contribute to the development of medical strategies and tactics for managed markets clinical decision makers

  • Contributes to the development of appropriate scientific messaging and education for clinical decision makers within payer and other health care delivery channels that are aligned with market access priorities

  • Delivers medical and managed markets insights from payer segments to the core medical team and respective market access teams

  • Accountable for communicating and tracking the alignment of overall MSO activities and reporting of outcomes that support achievement of defined, aligned business objectives

  • Oversees the MSO scientific training efforts to ensure ability to support the Shire portfolio and expand MA knowledge of managed market account segments and concepts

  • Oversees development/content of approved managed market scientific presentation materials

  • Demonstrates on-going scientific and business expertise relevant to Managed Markets

  • Maintains superior clinical and business expertise relevant to the Shire’s portfolio , including current treatment strategies, current and pending competitors and new therapeutic developments

  • Continually educates self on US market issues/trends and health care policy to support and influence the development of the broader business strategy for payer segments and key health delivery channels

  • Understands greatest needs, challenges and opportunities at major accounts

  • Effectively collaborates across US Medical Affairs to deliver value to Managed Markets customers

  • Facilitates regular updates of field market trends to core medical teams to inform payer, access and reimbursement strategies for US Medical Affairs

  • Effectively collaborates with Market Access and Brand Teams to communicate MSO activities and results

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A doctorate level degree (e.g. MD, PharmD, PhD) in life sciences with relevant residency and/or fellowship experience is preferred; however, a relevant life science degree (e.g. RN, MS) is required

  • 10+ years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry and/or managed care industry or in Public Health policy in leadership and management, preferably within a matrix structure, is required

  • Strong understanding of the US healthcare system, payers, reimbursement methods and integrated health systems

  • Minimum of 4 years of direct experience leading Medical Affairs Managed Markets teams is required

  • Experience in a field medical role with working knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements, Codes of Practice, Standard Operating Practices and guidelines is required

  • Demonstrated effective leadership skills and ability to work effectively in a cross-functional environment

  • Knowledge of health economics and requirements for conducting value-based discussions with key Managed Markets decision makers

  • Technical depth in supported TAs and ability to develop expertise across multiple disease areas

  • Strong scientific and business acumen with strategic influencing skills

  • Highly developed interpersonal, written and oral communication skills

  • Experience in providing scientific presentations to various groups

  • Capable of managing and leveraging relationships with a diverse group of geographically dispersed staff

  • Strong management skills with demonstrated ability to plan for resourcing needs, set goals and objectives, establish and recalibrate priorities, provide feedback and appraise work.

  • Ability to regularly assess individuals’ skills, talents and career interests which ensure development of a talent pool for the future

  • Experience in working with diverse cross-functional teams within the biopharmaceutical industry

  • Duties will sometimes call for early or late meetings/teleconferences. Ability to attend meetings on holidays and weekends.

  • Ability to travel up to 50% of time.
