Los Alamos National Laboratory Process and Sampling Technician 4/5 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Join Los Alamos National Laboratory and support the National Science and Security Mission as a dimensional, physical or electrical metrologist in the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Metrology Program and Calibration Laboratory (MP&CL). The MP&CL is an ISO 17025 accredited calibration laboratory providing traceable calibrations and metrology program support to LANL programs and organizations. This position will be filled at either the Process and Sampling Technician 4/5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Process and Sampling Technician 4 ($69,500 - $110,300)

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Perform or manage the setup, calibration, operation, maintenance, and repairs of a wide variety of precise and complex inspection equipment.

  • Develop advanced calibration and/or measurement techniques for new or one-of-a-kind instruments, equipment, and/or systems.

  • Accurately perform, review, and validate calibration calculations such as uncertainties and Test-Uncertainty-Ratios (TURs).

  • Provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of sophisticated scope and complexity.

  • Support Calibration Accreditation activities by collecting calibration data and developing, reviewing, validating procedures and/or calculations.

Process and Sampling Technician 5 ($83,900 - $136,600)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the (higher level title) will be required to:

  • Develop in-depth calibration and/or measurement techniques for new or one-of-a-kind instruments, equipment, and/or systems.

  • Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range goals and objectives.

  • Responsible and accountable for appropriate actions and decision-making with the assigned area.

  • May act as a lead and review activities of other employees.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated skill in conceptualizing and communicating major elements of calibrations for electrical, physical or dimensional disciplines.

  • Demonstrated skill in preparation and presentation of test-measurement results.

  • Demonstrated experience with precision, accuracy, and bias values.

  • Demonstrated experience in resolving measurement issues by conducting research and investigating alternative solutions.

  • Experience monitoring the performance of instruments for trends that may require the recalibration or servicing of the instrument.

  • Knowledge and experience in working to ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.

  • Proven ability to understand and interpret dimensional drawings, schematics, block diagrams, theories of operation, etc.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently with no supervision.

  • Ability to obtain a DOE "Q" Clearance, which normally requires U.S. Citizenship.

Additional Minimum Job Requirements for Process and Sampling Technician 5:

In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Process and Sampling Technician 5 level requires:

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in working to ISO/IEC 17025 requirements.

  • Ability to lead, instruct and direct the work of others.

Process and Sampling Technician 4 Education Required: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Process and Sampling Technician 5 Education Required: Position requires an Associate's Degree and 7 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to go on occasional domestic travel.

  • Knowledge of Indysoft or other calibration-related Laboratory Information Management Systems.

  • Knowledge and experience working with gage dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) if applicable.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Sitting, Standing, Walking, Bending, Stooping, Reaching overhead, Reaching horizontally, Reaching down, Typing or keyboarding, Use of both hands, Pushing with hands or arms, Lifting 20-30 pounds.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
