The Maritime Assurance Assessor team is part of the Maritime Standards division of Shell International Trading and Shipping Company Limited (STASCO) Shipping. Within the Global team, based in London, Houston, Rotterdam and Singapore are 4 Team Leaders and 23 Maritime Assurance Assessors reporting functionally to the Global Manager Maritime Assurance Downstream.

What’s the role?

You will be providing Maritime Assurance advice to all areas of the business (including Crude, Products, LPG, Gas LNG and Chemicals). The Maritime Assurance team is responsible for the confidential vetting and screening of vessels offered for all forms of Shell employment, including time charter inspections and ship owner management reviews. As a member of the high-performance SAFE Team providing 24 hour vetting service to the Shell Group of Companies in support of Global Shipping activities.

You will also be responsible for:

  • Understanding, management and implementation of Shell Maritime Quality Assurance Standards in support of Group requirements for shipping businesses for Oil, Chemicals, LNG and LPG Activities.

  • Application of established Shell vetting criteria for vessels nominated for Shell Group Business.

The successful candidate will undergo training to become OCIMF accredited inspector; and maintain an appropriate level of competence to conduct OCIMF SIRE Ship inspections, if required. Focused training will be given to support the Shell Time Charter Assurance Program. The incumbent will carry out Ship Owner Management reviews of third-party ship managers to determine acceptability for third party period charter business.

The position requires maintenance of the Assurance database (GMAS - Global Maritime Assurance System) of vessels, and Maritime Assurance Assessors are responsible for maintaining professional relations with all internal (STASCO, Shell Trading Network & Shell Businesses) customers as well as external customers (Ship Owners, Oil Companies, Ship Managers, Industry Organisations - OCIMF, CDI etc.).

Dimensions

Shell has approximately 2,000 vessels operating each day on behalf of the Group and the Global SQA team carries approximately 57,000 vessel screenings per annum.In order to manage the risk 24,000 OCIMF & CDI reports are reviewed and rated each year, of which 3,000 are carried out on behalf of Shell.

Approximately 100 Management Reviews of third party technical operators are conducted annually.

What we need from you

We are keen to hear from candidates with the following qualificaitons

  • Class I Certificate of Competency as a Deck or Engineer Officer.

  • At least two years sea service as a Senior Officer, from a total five years certificated sea service on tankers, is required to obtain SIRE accreditation. Candidates without this documented experience should not apply.

  • Previous experience ashore within Ship Quality Assurance (SQA), Technical and Operational management of tankers, and Designated Person Ashore (DPA) roles is considered an advantage.

  • Applicants with experience on both Oil tankers and Liquefied gas carriers in a Senior Rank, will be preferred.

  • Well conversant with international legislation (i.e. MARPOL, SOLAS, ISM) and Industry standards, codes and guidelines (i.e. ISGOTT, ICS, IBC) and the ability to apply these standards is key to this position.

  • Computer literacy with Microsoft applications is desirable.

  • An ability to communicate effectively and professionally with all levels within the organisation and with internal and external contacts is essential - as is the ability to approach problem solving in an innovative manner.

  • It is essential for the incumbent to be fluent in English and able to report effectively verbally and in writing.
