Scope:

Diageo’s Global Tax model aligns core roles in direct tax, indirect tax and tax business partnering.

Global Tax includes subject matter authorities, business partners, and reporting and compliance teams. Global Tax has developed Tax Reporting and Compliance Centers of Excellence in Budapest, Bogota, Bangalore and Manila. These centers support reporting, as well as technology and governance.

The North American Tax team is comprised of US tax and Canadian tax experts who lead all aspects of US & Canada (“NAM”) federal, state, and international income taxes, as well as key indirect taxes (sales/use/property). The team is accountable for all NAM income tax reporting, compliance, controversy, risk management, and planning in line with Diageo’s Global Tax Policy.

The role is accountable for federal tax reporting and compliance matters which include reviewing federal income tax returns and preparing tax provisions, including reserves and deferred taxes, cash tax payments, estimates, and other ad hoc projects.

The Tax Manager must have a deep understanding of tax accounting under IFRS and GAAP and other considerations that impact the federal income tax return. The Role is also responsible for analyzing current processes and recommending improvements to optimize efficiencies in the reporting lifecycle.

Dimensions:

a) Financial

  • The NAM market constitutes approximately 40% of the overall net sales and one half of operating profit for management purposes.

b) Market Complexity

  • The NAM market is very complex, active in all areas of Diageo global business (supply, brand ownership, marketing and distribution etc.). The legislative environment is very complex and can change rapidly.

  • Reporting includes more than 20 management reporting packages, multiple legal entities, and federal, state, provincial and local audits.

c) Leadership Responsibilities & Capabilities

  • The Tax Manager is responsible for:

  • Displaying Diageo Leadership Standards and Diageo Behaviors.

  • Leading multiple projects and priorities with outstanding interpersonal skills and dedication to positive team dynamics.

  • Communicating with and influencing senior partners across the business.

  • Handling resources across multiple teams and countries to achieve brilliant outcomes.

Purpose of Role:

  • The Tax Manager role has primary responsibility for day-to-day US federal tax compliance, accounting and reporting and for ensuring timely payment of taxes and filing of returns, and provides a supporting role in tax controversy and various projects.

  • Top Accountabilities:

  • Review US federal income tax returns for completeness and correctness.

  • Support Diageo’s tax reporting and compliance teams, including with CAMT and international requirements such as BEAT, FDII and Pillar II.

  • Prepare tax provisions and income tax reconciliations and eliminations for compliance purposes.

  • Draft tax technical memoranda.

  • Support domestic and international tax planning, including working on special projects internally and with external advisors..

  • Handle tax fixed asset processes, including reconciliations, compliance and reporting.

  • Maintain a strong tax controls environment and provide support to identify and mitigate risks.

  • Analyze provision to return differences.

  • Prepare tax accruals, reclass entries and budgets.

  • Supervise external providers in preparation of foreign-related filings, including but not limited to Forms 5471, 5472, and 1042.

  • Support state tax return preparation and review processes.

  • Support U.S. federal and state tax audits and Canadian tax audits as needed.

Qualifications and Experience Required:

  • Strong US federal tax technical knowledge.

  • Experience in conducting legal research.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Advanced financial modeling and excel skills.

  • 6-11 years of US domestic corporate tax compliance and reporting experience.

  • Both corporate and advisory experience preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Accounting or Finance preferred.

  • CPA and/or advanced degree in taxation preferred.

  • Strong corporate tax accounting knowledge (ASC740 & IAS12).

  • Ability to effectively lead, collaborate, and excel in a team oriented environment to optimize the company’s tax position.

  • SAP knowledge preferred.
