Basic Function

We're hiring for multiple positions for elections workers for the upcoming election. These positions are non-partisan and focused on ensuring that elections in Ramsey County run efficiently for all voters.

To perform clerical support functions relating to the activities of the work unit to which assigned to include records maintenance, public contact and general office services; and to perform related duties as assigned. (This is the entry-level class in the Clerk series. It provides an opportunity to gain the knowledge and skills that are needed to function at the higher levels of the Clerk series.)

Hours and duration

This is a temporary position with an expected start date of August 27, 2024, and planned end date of mid- to end of November 2024. The end date will be based on needs of the elections division. The ideal candidate will be able to work close to 40 hours per week during standard business hours. There are some mandatory weekend dates. Early voting opens 18 days before election day which may require later work hours for some staff, and potential for overtime leading up to Election Day (November 5).

If an internal candidate is selected, salary will be set in accordance with the personnel rules (i.e., promotion, transfer, or voluntary reduction).

Examples of Work Performed

  • Perform duties relating to forms and records maintenance such as gathering documents and information to establish, maintain and update files; searching files for information; maintaining departmental records and statistics; opening, maintaining and closing case files; and recommending new forms or other revision of existing forms. Depending on assignment, duties may involve the maintenance of or retrieval of information from electronic data files by operating computer terminals.

  • Perform public contact duties such as receiving and routing phone calls; responding to complaints, inquiries and service requests by phone and in person; directing clients or visitors to proper locations; assisting the public in completing forms; scheduling appointments for clients or staff; and assigning service requests to program units or staff in accordance with established guidelines.

  • Perform general office services to include opening, sorting and distributing mail and preparing outgoing mail; preparing and sending form letters and composing routine letters; photocopying documents; and related duties.

  • Perform budget maintenance or payroll duties such as preparing or verifying timesheets or payrolls; maintaining inventories of office supplies; preparing, checking or processing reimbursements, requisitions, purchase orders and accounts payable forms; preparing, checking or processing bills to patients, clients or other agencies; receiving and receipting for cash; and maintaining and balancing accounts in accordance with office bookkeeping practices.

  • Perform clerical functions peculiar to the unit to which assigned which may involve duties relating to checking, verifying, processing or distributing forms, records, computer print-outs, documents, and payments.

  • May receive, sort and distribute mail and perform other messenger work as required.

  • May perform typing assignments incidental to the primary clerical functions performed.

  • Perform duties relating to the production of correspondence and other written materials, such as gathering, collating and packaging items for distribution.

(The work assigned to a position in this classification may not include all possible tasks in this description and does not limit the assignment of any additional tasks in this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required.)

All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and properly complete an application will be forwarded to the hiring department/manager for consideration for this temporary position. Temporary appointments work up to a maximum of six months. Candidates chosen for hire into a temporary assignment will not gain any rights or preferences for other permanent, Ramsey County positions.
