The Opportunity

This position works out of our Abbott Park, IL location in the GES Global Engineering Services division.

The Corporate Engineering organization is looking for an experienced and motivated individual to serve as Senior Specialist - Engineering. This opportunity is for someone who wants to positively impact the organization in a meaningful role that administratively supports, facilitates and coordinates engineering activities that span across divisions and regions. A part of Global Engineering Services (GES), Corporate Engineering exists to provide support to Abbott’s businesses to help them drive sustainable growth and margin improvement. Corporate Engineering does this by providing cutting-edge solutions, subject matter expertise, best practices, and technologies across Abbott. The GES/CE Senior Specialist - Engineering role significantly contributes to that mission by enabling engineering activities across a broad set of responsibilities as outlined below.

What You’ll Work On

  • Provide administrative, analytical, process and document management support to engineering teams for the effective and efficient delivery of services comprising project definition, design reviews, project execution commissioning/qualification/validation (CQV), project closeout, and knowledge management (KM).

  • Maintain the SME Design Review workflow process – Tracks status by project / by phase, coordinates preparations for project reviews (scheduling, documentation, PMAC SharePoint site setup and maintenance, tracking of action items/activities, etc.), and facilitates portfolio review meetings.

  • Utilize Bluebeam software as a collaborative tool for SME Design Reviews.

  • Facilitate monthly/quarterly reporting for capital projects, design reviews and cost recovery, and other relevant departmental metrics such as project data for Management Business Review, etc.

  • Support Abbott Engineering Standards (AES) committees’ goals/initiatives, and may participate as an active member in one or more committees.

  • Manage communications between GES/CE engineering team, client/division engineering team, and appointed Architecture/Engineering firm, coordinates site visits, and schedules design reviews. Potential to expand responsibilities to include technical support and facilitation for design reviews.

  • Administer the department’s SharePoint sites, and associated recurring tasks, pertaining monthly Major Projects updates, Dashboards, and others.

  • Support Project Engineers / Project Managers as follows:

  • During Capital Planning: Long Range Plan (LRP) and Capital Plan activities.

  • During FEP: Compile RCE package, craft RCE checklists, eRCE write-up, estimate asset write-offs.

  • During Execution: SAP transactions, BOBJ reports, Maximo workorders, ECMS documentation gathering, PMAC site setup and management, quarterly accruals process, monthly project review dashboards, and FCD extensions.

  • During Closeout: AIF, ARF, PCN, Final Acceptance, open commitments / invoice reconciliations, PMAC/ECMS turn-over documents.

  • Support Commissioning/Validation personnel in development of protocol template packages for execution and data recording.

  • Facilitate identification of the knowledge critical to the organization across categories (e.g., technical (“know-how”), strategic (“know-why”), and people (“know-who”)).

  • Ensure that knowledge generated within the organization is made easily visible and available to users.

  • Identify unmet needs and develop ways to meet them leveraging people, process and technology.

  • Understand Abbott’s CapEx Project Delivery Process, Front-End Planning (FEP) and Project Execution Guidance (PEG) processes, GES/CE SME Design Review process, Financial reporting process (LBE, cashflow, cost recovery).

  • Organizational Interface: Establish contacts with immediate supervisor, project leaders, managers, and other professionals. Prepares written communications. Convey information effectively through formal and informal documents and meetings with team members, both internal and external to Abbott, using appropriate communication protocols. Establish and build relationships, good communication and ensure stakeholder satisfaction. Initiates and cultivates open, professional relationships with stakeholders by establishing rapport, developing an understanding of others’ needs, promoting common goals, and following through on commitments.

  • Develop and maintain standards, procedures, guidelines and job aids for efficient, effective and sustainable processes. Coordinate with technical personnel to plan and conduct work required to achieve deliverables. Assist in the resolution and prevention of problems and provides training.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Technical/Engineering or Architecture degree preferred.

  • 2+ years of experience in project management or technical area

  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multitasking skills

  • Excellent communication skills, with experience of working with cross functional teams

  • Confident and effective communicator utilizing various media

  • Skillful listener with an open style; good at facilitating discussion

  • Good at networking and sharing ideas and successes

  • Creative, self‐motivated with strong problem‐solving skills

  • Has led small group and large group communications management via facilitation, presentations and training

  • Expected to function independently with project teams with minimal supervision

  • Ability to interact with project teams across all divisions and multiple functional groups

  • Applies skills to situations and seek necessary advice to resolve issues

  • Good appreciation of customer needs; customer service focus

  • Smartsheet, Microsoft Power BI, or other project management/analytics software

The base pay for this position is $72,700.00 – $145,300.00. In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
