Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. To be eligible for appointment under NY HELPS, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications below:A bachelor's degree in biological, environmental, or physical science, chemistry, chemical, environmental, or nuclear engineering, health physics, nuclear medicine technology, mathematics, civil engineering, or mechanical engineering and three years of experience in radiological science, radiological engineering, or nuclear engineering. One year of this experience must have included the direct supervision of health physics or radiation safety staff. Candidates may also be eligible via the following:For Provisional Appointment:Promotion - One year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Environmental Radiation Specialist 1. Open Competitive - A bachelor's degree in biological, environmental, or physical science, chemistry, chemical, environmental, or nuclear engineering, health physics, nuclear medicine technology, mathematics, civil engineering, or mechanical engineering and three years of experience in radiological science, radiological engineering, or nuclear engineering. One year of this experience must have included the direct supervision of health physics or radiation safety staff. For Permanent Appointment:Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC.orReinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.orTransfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 21 or higher and eligible to transfer via Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. Duties Description The incumbent will serve to protect the public health and safety from exposures to radioactive materials released to the environment, from the disposal of radioactive waste and from incidents where radioactive materials are released. Specific duties will include overseeing the work of ERS1 staff assigned to the program; training staff in appropriate inspection techniques, proper use of radiation survey instruments and the application of various sampling techniques; overseeing the inspection of active facilities and large clean-up projects of legacy contaminated sites; reviewing documents; preparing reports; inspecting regulated facilities; reviewing permit applications; performing radiation dose assessments; operating specialized survey instruments; responding to incidents involving radioactive materials; and participating in emergency response planning and exercises.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.Travel may be required.Overnight travel may be required.Weekends and holidays may be required.
