Library Systems & Services Reference Librarian in Alexandria, Virginia

Our management team is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Reference Librarian to join our team. As a Reference Librarian, you will provide reference services, curate data and maintain the overall efficiency of our Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based library.

Office Location: Alexandria, VA - Yellow Line

Work Hours: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Effectively support a science-based federal agency by managing the acquisition, organization, and maintenance of physical and digital catalog collections.

• Develop and implement preservation strategies to ensure long-term access and usability of physical and digital materials

• Develop metadata and taxonomies for cataloging collections to ensure efficient search and retrieval.

• Provide training and support to library staff and patrons on the use of physical and digital resources.

• Collaborate with subject librarians to support digital scholarship initiatives and promote the use of collections in research and teaching

• Stay up-to-date with emerging trends and technologies in digital librarianship and information management.

• Complete other duties include tracking usage statistics, participation in special projects as assigned.

Requirements

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited institution.

  • At least 1-3 years of experience in reference librarianship

  • Proven experience in distilling complex research into succinct, accurate, and grammatically correct technical writing in response to research/reference requests

  • Working knowledge of digital preservation standards and best practices in a professional environment

  • Hands-on experience with metadata and taxonomies for digital collections.

  • Excellent written and oral communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast paced environment

  • Strong analytical, detailed orientation, and prioritization skills,

  • Advanced experience in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Programming language is a plus but not required.

  • Likes to work independently.

  • Will work in a small team with one other librarian and the client.
