Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The School of Education (SOE) in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University invites applications for a teaching faculty position in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Social Studies at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor with a start date of August 16, 2024. This is a 2-year full-time term faculty position with the possibility for renewal and carries a four course per semester teaching load. Renewal parameters are determined by performance and school need.

We seek a dynamic, innovative, and enthusiastic colleague who is concerned with supporting the development of pre-service elementary social studies teachers. The successful candidate should demonstrate a knowledge of and commitment to equitable social studies teaching practices and who has experience with implementation of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) standards.

Specifically, we are looking for a faculty colleague to: (a) teach undergraduate methods courses in elementary social studies in our elementary education program; (b) teach other courses in our elementary education program such as undergraduate Foundations of Education courses (EDUC 204/205) and the Introduction to Elementary Teaching course (EDUC 245); and (c) participate in School of Education service, including program and school-level meetings and committees.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Elementary Education or a closely related field

  • Completion of a teacher preparation program

  • Licensure/certification (in any state) in elementary education

  • Three years of experience as an elementary school teacher

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced coursework or PhD in elementary social studies education or closely related field

  • Experience preparing/supporting elementary school teachers

  • Evidence of effective teaching at the post-secondary level

  • Additional years as a successful elementary teacher

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to equitable social studies teaching practices

  • Experience with implementation of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) standards
