Job Description:Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, seeks applicants for a 3-year Research Assistant Professor with an emphasis in swine nutrition and modeling. Position responsibilities are approximately 80% research, 15% teaching or outreach, and 5% institutional service. The successful applicant is expected to demonstrate excellence in research related to farrow-to-finish nutrition, modeling, and livestock sustainability. The applicant should possess strong laboratory skills and research techniques. They will be expected to develop a collaborative, externally-funded research program. Areas of potential research related to farrow-to-finish nutrition include, but are not limited to, amino acid utilization, mammary function, gas and nutrient emissions, and commercial production data management. The successful applicant is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching undergraduate courses related to animal nutrition and swine production management.

The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to address emerging and traditional issues in swine science and management and demonstrate the ability to create a research program that addresses those needs and provides information the swine industry. The successful applicant will have ample opportunity to work in cross-disciplinary teams for both teaching and research with faculty in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, or other colleges across campus. Evidence of effective written and oral communication skills is required. Additionally, the successful applicant must have demonstrated the ability to work in a team-based, collaborative environment to solve problems, develop programs, and teach effectively. Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of a Ph.D. in animal science or related area with an emphasis in swine nutrition by start date

  • Research experience in swine nutrition/management

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Demonstrated effective use of basic and applied research approaches appropriate for farrow-to-finish swine research.

  • Documented evidence of effective research

  • Documented effectiveness in teaching and/or industry outreach

  • Experience in farrow-to-finish nutrition and management

  • Experience in swine industry sustainability and modeling as evidence by scholarly outputs

  • Experience in large database management and analysis

  • Experience working in a team-based, collaborative environment
