About the Business

We are looking for a senior NLP data scientist to join our RDP team and further advance our information extraction and entity linking capabilities.

About our Team

In RDP, we are describing the world of scientific research as accurately as possible by profiling a wide range of entities, from People and Organizations to research artefacts such as Publications and Grants all the way to topics and concepts that characterize what research is about. Our entity-linking and disambiguation systems integrate data from a diverse set of sources that include millions of research articles to demonstrate market leading performance. The RDP team is large, full of talented people, and highly cross-functional and collaborative: As a data scientist, you will be working together with software engineers, analysts, product managers, and architects on your area of focus, and also be part of the wider RDP Data Science team.

About the Role

As a Senior NLP Data Scientist you will be improving existing and developing novel state-of-the-art concept annotation and classification capabilities for scientific text, to power Elsevier’s products. With data quality being vital to Elsevier’s success, there is a strong focus on measuring and improving data quality and coverage. At the same time, the increasingly large volumes of data involved requires you to maintain and develop systems and models that scale well.

Responsibilities

  • Working alongside Data Scientists supporting their work to create, develop and build data to perform data transformations.

  • Acting as a recognized expert in data science, championing best practice

  • Working with the team to extract, prepare and validate data as required.

  • communicating adequately and effectively with colleagues and stakeholders to ensure the best outcome.

Requirements

  • A positive and constructive mind-set, with an emphasis on collaboration.

  • Experience to independently prepare, plan, and successfully deliver complete data science projects, by working with others and interacting with all stakeholders involved.

  • Not afraid to challenge the status quo when necessary, and at the same time respect the opinions of others in your team.

  • Willing to learn new things and come up with practical solutions to technical challenges.

  • A formal qualification at least at MSc level in computer science, computational linguistics, AI, machine learning, or equivalent.

  • Solid hands-on experience with developing scalable data science solutions

  • Demonstrable coding skills in Java, Scala, or Python.

  • Knowledge of applying machine learning techniques.

  • Experience with natural language processing, preferably involving text mining.

  • Experience with databases (SQL, NoSQL data stores, etc.)
