Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This position is represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 1547 (Technicians) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), Local 1547 (Technicians).

DEPARTMENT: Public Transportation / Maintenance Division

HOURS OF WORK: Current: Monday through Friday, 6:00am to 2:30pm. Alternate schedule may be negotiable. Schedule may be subject to changes to accommodate business needs.

LOCATION: 3701 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue

Example of Duties

Responsible for the efficient and complete inspection, documentation, and repair of buses, light-duty vehicles, and equipment due to accidents or wear and tear on a variety of buses, and light-duty vehicles and equipment used by the department. Work includes but is not limited to repair, rebuild, fabrication and/or replacement of bumpers, window glass, body panels, fiberglass components, rubber and wood flooring, sheet metal work, and frame straightening and/or repair on Transit buses and other vehicles used by the Public Transportation Department. Prepare surfaces and apply a variety of paints in a professional finish on repaired surfaces. Must be able to perform welding using MIG, TIG, and oxygen/acetylene as well as fabricate parts and components using a variety of materials and techniques. Utilize Municipality of Anchorage Maintenance Management Software (MMS) to document work performed. Accurately identify and request parts. Utilize MS Excel to create detailed and accurate estimates of repair for vehicles damaged in accidents. Use a variety of specialized hand and power tools to accomplish repairs and replace damaged parts. Must provide own standard tools of the trade. Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and others to promote a safe, clean, and harmonious work environment. Clean and maintain shop work areas. Must maintain regular time and attendance standards. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and completion of an approved body and paint apprenticeship program, and four (4) years of journeyman level body and paint experience.

OR

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and five (5) years of journeyman level body and paint experience.

Must possess the following certifications by the time of hire:

  • Valid State of Alaska OHSA Respirator Certification

  • Valid State of Alaska Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Hazardous Painting Certification

Must possess the following:

  • At time of application - Valid driver's license - Note: Current valid driver's license MUST be attached to the application in order to be considered.

  • At time of hire - Valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.

  • OR

  • At time of application - Valid driver's license - Note: Current valid driver's license MUST be attached to the application in order to be considered.

  • At time of hire - Valid State of Alaska driver's license & State of Alaska Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).

  • Within 120 days – must obtain a valid State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement and no air brake restriction. Applicants with a Restriction of "N-No Class A and B Passenger Vehicle" and Restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" are not eligible.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted Background Check. A Background Check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's State of Alaska Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement and No Air Brake Restriction and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a medical physical and functional capacity examination and will also be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the satisfactory review and completion of the Previous Employer Alcohol & Drug Test Information Forms. Names, addresses, and phone numbers for positions that required Department of Transportation testing for the last two years will be required in compliance with § 40.25 and § 382.405(f) and (h).

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the State of Alaska OHSA Respirator Fitness Certification.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the State of Alaska Hazardous Painting Certification.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Incumbents are required to furnish hand tools common to the trade.

Military Service Interview Preference:

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
