The Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS) Long Range Discrimination Radar (LRDR) System Administrator is responsible for monitoring and maintaining mission computer systems, ensuring their optimal performance for critical radar operations. This role responds to system malfunctions, conducts diagnostics, and implements corrective actions to resolve system issues. The LRDR System Administrator manages user accounts, performs software installations and upgrades, and maintains system configuration related to various radar applications. They are also responsible for implementing and monitoring security protocols, maintaining accurate records and logs, and supporting the Cyber Security Liaison. This position may require shift work and reports to the Communications / Electronics Manager.

Responsibilities

Major Job Activities:

  • Monitors mission computer systems, responds immediately to malfunctions, and keeps users informed of real-time equipment status.

  • Uses diagnostic routines to identify root causes of system malfunctions.

  • Utilizes computer outputs to assess system status and troubleshoot errors.

  • Utilizes maintenance laptop to diagnose malfunctions.

  • Analyzes system data and provides recommendations to resolve assigned computer system degradation and failures.

  • Follows all communications, operational and physical security requirements for the generation, handling, marking, controlling, protecting, and disposition of classified material and information.

  • Maintains records, logs, files, and prepares reports.

  • Controls government assets.

  • Assist members of the CMOC and operations staff in associated computer technologies.

  • Develop and implement backup strategies and system restoration procedures.

  • Add, remove, and maintain user accounts.

  • Develop and maintain checklists to be used by site computer technicians.

  • Performs mission system software installations and upgrades.

  • Maintain system configuration with respect to UEWR applications: Mission Application Software (MAS), Signal Processing Software (SPS), Receiver-Exciter Software (RES) and Data Reduction.

  • Monitor disk storage capacities and maintain adequate disk storage availability for all users and applications.

  • Implement security procedures and monitor system usage.

  • Assist the site Cyber Security Liaison in reviewing system security information and maintain relevant security accountability logs and records.

  • Acknowledge and resolve problems with RAID file system.

  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Communications / Electronics Manager.

  • Position may require shift duty.

  • Works under the general supervision of the Communications / Electronics Manager.

    Material & Equipment Directly Used:

    US Space Force (USSF) classified and unclassified computer systems, system administration consoles, diagnostic software, maintenance laptops, SIPRNET, NIPRNET, and backup storage devices.

    Working Environment:

  • Computing center environment.

  • May work extended hours or weekends.

  • Must be prepared to work in varying environmental conditions, including exposure to extreme cold and extended periods of darkness at Clear SFS, AK.

    Physical Activities:

  • Sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods while monitoring systems.

  • Lifting and moving computer hardware and peripherals weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Bending, crouching, and reaching to install or troubleshoot equipment.

  • Walking between server rooms and workstations.

Qualifications

Education / Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field preferred.

  • Preferred certification: Certifications in network security, such as Security+ or similar certifications from DoD 8140 Cyber Workforce Qualification Program.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and possess a DoD Top Secret security clearance or be eligible to obtain and maintain one.

    Required Experience:

    5-7 years of experience with a concentration in the following areas:

  • 2-3 years of experience as a System Administrator using Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).

  • Local Area Network (LAN) and Cisco switch administration.

  • Silicon Graphics (SGI) UV 2000 administration.

  • SGI Rackable C2108-RP2 server administration.

  • SGI UV System Management Node (SMN) administration.

  • SGI Infinite Storage IS5000 RAID administration.

  • Protogate Freeway communication servers.

  • XLi SAASM Time & Frequency GPS Receivers & IOLan Terminal Servers.

  • Network File Server (NFS) architecture and administration.

  • LANs, WANs, TCP/IP, SNMP and networking with emphasis on Cisco Catalyst switches.

  • Software licensing, C++, software build processes, Perl, Python, or shell scripting.

  • Matlab, MATE, Mathematica, Satellite Tool Kit (STK), Missile Conversion Tool (MCT).

  • Phased Array Radar principles.

    Skills & Technology Used:

    Strong understanding of radar systems, including design, performance, capabilities, and limitations.
