Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice pharmacy plus three years of experience as a licensed pharmacist.

SUBSTITUTIONS:

A master's degree in pharmacy will substitute for one year of the required experience.

A doctorate in pharmacy will substitute for two years of the required experience.

Completion of an accredited pharmacy residency program will substitute for two years of the required experience.

Advanced degrees will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience.

Function of Work:

To provide direct line supervision of lower-level pharmacist or equivalent-level professional staff.

Level of Work:

Supervisor.

Supervision Received:

Broad direction from higher-level pharmacist or other high-level health care personnel.

Supervision Exercised:

Direct line over lower-level pharmacists or equivalent-level professionals. May also supervise pharmacy support staff.

Location of Work:

May be used by all state agencies.

Job Distinctions:

Differs from the Pharmacist 3 by the presence of supervisory responsibility.

Differs from the Pharmacist 5-A by the presence of exercising direct line supervision over professional pharmacists or equivalent-level positions.

Differs from the Pharmacist 5-B by the absence of serving as the pharmacist-in-charge and exercising supervision over lower-level pharmacists or equivalent-level professionals.

Examples of Work

Reviews and evaluates the work performance of subordinate staff.

Ensure the compliance of pharmacy policies and procedures to maintain certification or licensing.

Reconciles pharmacy records with physician's orders and medication records; assists in designing channels for reporting irregularities.

Participate in formulating professional service policies regarding drug evaluation, selection, procurement, distribution, use of safe practices, etc. to comply with state and federal laws and regulations.

Develops and coordinates the orientation and training of new departmental employees.

Maintains patient profiles for in-patients and/or out-patients and monitors these for incompatibilities, interactions, and dosage.

Plans and conducts continuing education or in-service training on pharmacy services and practices for professional staff.

Coordinates pharmacy services with patient services provided by other work units, departments, or health care providers.

Organizes and schedules work activities.

Assist in formulating and implementing accountability procedures including those for controlled substances and narcotics.

Participate in evaluating proposed formulary additions and deletions.

Provide drug information services to other members of the health care team.

Provide drug education to clients and/or their families.

Dispense drugs to clients, clinics, and wards according to proper pharmacy procedures.
