Summary
The Raoul Wallenberg Institute at the University of Michigan (U-M) was established in December 2023 as part of a university-wide effort to combat antisemitism and advance religious diversity and inclusion on all three campuses. We are bringing together leading U-M expertise and diverse perspectives toward a safer and more inclusive world, and even more, a brighter world of peace, announced President Santa J. Ono.
Raoul Wallenberg, the institute's namesake, was a Swedish humanitarian who graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in architecture in 1935. Nine years later he volunteered to work in Budapest on behalf of the US War Refugee Board to aid US efforts to rescue European Jews during the Holocaust. He is credited with saving some twenty thousand Jews from deportation to the Auschwitz death camp by establishing safe houses and handing out Swedish protective papers. Wallenberg was made an honorary citizen of the United States by President Ronald Reagan one of only eight people in history to receive this honor and was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by President Barack Obama. Since 1985, Wallenberg's legacy has been honored at the University of Michigan through the Wallenberg Medal and Lecture and the Wallenberg Fellowship.
The institute will foster the values embodied by Raoul Wallenberg empathy, tolerance, and leadership by studying hatred directed against religious and ethnic communities, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and elevating civic discourse. Through teaching, research, and public engagement, the institute will develop strategies to combat antisemitism, divisiveness, and discrimination.

Responsibilities*
Implementing programmatic initiatives set by the Faculty Director and Executive Committee. The Academic Program Officer will provide operational support on the institute's key strategic objectives.
Teaching and Curriculum Promoting curricular development across the universityDeveloping a flagship courseFacilitating experiential learning activitiesOverseeing a student leadership fellows program
Research Conducting major research initiativesAdministering research funding supportOverseeing residential fellowships
Public Engagement Disseminating the institute's research to the publicCoordinating a speaker/event seriesConducting educational outreach programs to K-12 schools and other colleges and universities
Supervising office staff - As the Institute grows it will require additional staff to fulfill the duties of an academic services manager, an outreach coordinator, and a research/grant specialist. This position will help develop those job descriptions and hire and onboard the positions.
Budget Management - In conjunction with the Chief Administrator and the Faculty Director this position will manage the day-to-day budget of the Institute.
Partner with faculty and business office staff to develop and implement internal and external grant proposals.
Work with the Faculty Director to set development/fundraising priorities, meet with donors, and guide the efforts of the development officer(s) who assist with fundraising.
Liaising with other units across LSA and U-M, as well as with other related institutions outside the university - Strong partnerships will be crucial to the success of the Institute. This position will play a key role in establishing those relationships and helping them grow.
Program assessment - Work with the Faculty Director and Executive Committee on annual assessment of the various Institute initiatives.
Required Qualifications*
Master's Degree or higher in a related field. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of working effectively with diverse groups of students, faculty and staff, managing confidential materials and situations, and working independently to manage competing interests in a demanding, fast-paced setting. Ability to work independently and manage several tasks at once, in a fast-paced and evolving setting. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively to multiple audiences through a variety of mediums.
Desired Qualifications*
Ph.D. in a related field, with particular interest in candidates who have five (5) years of relevant experience.
Additional Information
The target salary for this role ranges from $80K to $100K with a higher salary possible for well-qualified candidates.
