Responsibilities*

The Whiteford Lab is seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to study mechanisms of auditory perception across the adult lifespan. The primary responsibility is to lead research projects related to sound neural coding and perception in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) who are positive for biomarkers of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Working with this vulnerable population requires sensitivity and compassion and the ability to communicate well with people from a variety of backgrounds. Hearing loss is a potentially modifiable risk factor for AD; job candidates should have a strong interest in understanding mechanisms of hearing loss in healthy aging and how this compares to people with MCI. Additional duties include mentoring of junior trainees, maintenance of lab equipment, and other general tasks that come with being part of an active research lab. This is a new lab in the Kresge Hearing Research Institute (KHRI) at the University of Michigan (U-M), Ann Arbor. The research fellow will participate in a highly collaborative environment within and outside of the KHRI at U-M, with the potential for strong ties with the neuroscience and clinical audiology departments at U-M as well as the Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Center. KHRI and the broader neuroscience community at U-M provide a world-class research environment and excellent career development opportunities for postdoctoral fellows. The Whiteford Lab believes that a supportive and diverse lab environment is key to promoting individual and team success.

Required Qualifications*

  • PhD in Neuroscience, Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, Speech-Language Hearing Sciences, or a related field.

  • Ability to work independently, including identifying new scientific directions.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Prior experience with EEG and auditory psychophysics is desired, but anyone with a strong interest in aging and auditory perception, especially relating to MCI and AD, is encouraged to apply.

  • Strong programming skills in MATLAB or other scientific computing language.
