Summary George Washington Memorial Parkway runs along the Potomac River through two states-Virginia and Maryland-as well as the District of Columbia, protecting the landscape and natural shoreline of the river while offering magnificent scenic vistas of Washington, D.C., and the Great Falls of the Potomac. Along its route, the parkway also connects several important historic sites, memorials, and scenic and recreation areas in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Responsibilities The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher-graded workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. As a Maintenance Worker you will: Working largely without direct supervision, operates and performs minor maintenance on a variety of vehicles such as front- end loader, 5-ton dump truck, hot oil distributor, road brooms, street sweepers, asphalt lay down machine, etc. Operates equipment on flat or rolling terrain, construction sites, wet and/or snowy conditions. Performs duties such as plowing snow, spreading road material, hauling materials to job site, loading material on dump truck, removing rockslides, clearing sides of roads, removing hazardous trees, and compacting asphalt etc. Perform functions such as painting, plumbing; trails and grounds work; trash and debris clean-up. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You must possess and maintain a current Class B Type (or higher) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an Airbrake Endorsement (Screen Out). You must provide a copy of your CDL License with your application materials, or you will not be considered. You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. This position is designated Emergency Essential. You must be able to lift 75 lbs. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Working Conditions: Exposure to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposure to dust, dirt wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.
