Ohio University Assistant Dean for Research and Education Services in Athens, Ohio

Job Description:

Ohio University Libraries are seeking user-focused and forward-thinking applicants with a commitment to continuous learning to serve as the assistant dean for research and education services.

The role of Assistant Dean for Research and Education Services is critical to advancing the Libraries’ strategic initiatives in support of the University’s dynamic strategy by supporting research and learning at Ohio University, a teaching institution with R1 status. This position provides leadership for and oversight to the University Libraries’ Research & Education Services division, which includes the Libraries’ frontline, in-person and online service points, teaching, learning, and research services delivered across all campuses. As a member of the Libraries’ Leadership Team, this position collaboratively develops and executes Libraries’ strategic goals and related resource planning. This position builds and stewards collaborative partnerships on behalf of the Libraries across the university and in the broader academic research library profession.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides leadership and develops strategic and operational goals for the Libraries’ Research and Education Services Division, including the User Services, Research Services, Learning Services, and Libraries IT departments. Serves as first-level supervisor of managers of those departments, as well as of the Events and Exhibits Coordinator.

  • As a member of the Libraries Leadership Team, collaboratively develops and executes Libraries-wide strategy to support experiential learning, inter- and multi-disciplinary research and curricula, open scholarship and science, and new digital tools for knowledge creation including AI. Builds awareness across Ohio University community of software, services and support available via the Libraries.

  • Fosters partnerships and collaborations with key university partners in support of teaching, learning, and research. Represents the Libraries on university-wide groups such as Associate Deans for Research and University Curriculum Council. Engages deeply and broadly with faculty and students to identify barriers to excellence in teaching, learning and research and develops innovative solutions. Partners with colleagues in other schools, colleges and units invested in the success of teaching and research at Ohio University to share information, build partnerships and advance collaborations.

  • Collaborates closely with the Assistant Dean for Collections and Digitization Strategies to ensure cooperative and collaborative initiatives across the Libraries. This includes organizational management and cross-departmental initiatives.

The Environment:

The assistant dean for research and education services will be a critical member of the Libraries’ leadership team. The Division, which includes Research Services, User Services, Learning Services, and Library IT, is in the first year of a reorganization to increase collaboration and forward-thinking library work. This reorganization reorients the work of librarians serving in outward-facing roles to emphasize and prioritize student and faculty-centered services for student success and faculty teaching and research excellence. This restructuring allows for greater flexibility and efficiency in the delivery of traditional subject librarian work such as collection development and traditional library instruction.

Ohio University joined the most elite group of research institutions in the country by earning the R1 classification in the latest Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The research services scholarly impact librarian will partner with other librarians to foster collaborations that support and work with researchers at the highest level.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited school or from a master’s level program in library and information studies accredited or recognized by the appropriate national body of another country.

  • More than 8 years of work experience.

  • At least 3 years of management experience.

Advertised Salary:

The target salary for this position is $115,000 to $128,000 and is commensurate with the selected candidate’s education and experience.
