Job Description

Norfolk Southern Corporation is seeking a skilled F5 Network Engineer responsible for supporting IP data and telecommunications network connectivity across its enterprise data center environments. This role focuses on leveraging expertise in F5 architecture and operation within complex enterprise networks. The candidate will principally manage F5 networks, with additional responsibility over Cisco WAN/LAN, Infoblox IP Address Management (IPAM), and Palo Alto firewalls.

Responsibilities

  • Configure, implement, and manage F5 load balancing.

  • Design, deploy, and maintain an enterprise network infrastructure.

  • Provide operational support for data center networking.

  • Utilize network monitoring tools to ensure rapid incident response.

  • Identify network device abnormalities, document findings, and develop mitigation strategies.

  • Develop and deliver training on F5 technology to frontline operations teams.

  • Administer and update existing iRules and policies.

  • Work autonomously and as part of a team to drive projects to successful completion.

  • Apply advanced problem-solving, critical thinking, and project planning skills.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation.

  • Manage multiple ongoing projects with the ability to pivot quickly as priorities shift.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide after-hours support when necessary.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field preferred; or comparable industry-experience.

Skills Required

  • 5+ years of experience with F5 BIG-IP architecture, including Local Traffic Manager (LTM) and Global Traffic Manager (GTM).

  • Proven experience configuring and maintaining F5 host, VCMP, and tenant deployments.

  • Proven experience designing, troubleshooting, and maintaining iRules and policies.

  • Proficiency in maintaining F5 BIG-IQ management systems.

  • Hands-on experience with Cisco network administration, including Nexus routing/switching.

  • In-depth knowledge of networking protocols such as OSPF, BGP, HSRP, Multicast, QoS, VLANs, and MPLS.

Skills Desired

  • Experience with cloud networking solutions, including security considerations.

  • Experience designing and implementing data center network architectures.

  • Hands-on experience with Cisco ACI network environments.

  • Familiarity with F5 TMOS to BIG-IP Next migration strategies.

  • Proficiency with Palo Alto Next-Generation Firewalls and Panorama administration.

  • Change, Incident, and Problem Management discipline within the ServiceNow platform.

  • Working directly with OEMs to troubleshoot problems, identify bugs, and develop a platform roadmap.

Must be available for rotational on-call responsibilities, approximately once every two months.
