Position Summary

The Innovation & Business Development Director ( IBDD ) serves as a vital ally and contributor within the Office of Impact and Innovation ( IMIN ), offering expertise on digital modernization and product design initiatives and strategies to foster the innovation landscape at Morehouse School of Medicine ( MSM ). Devoting their time under the guidance of the Vice President for Impact and Innovation/Chief Innovation Officer, the IBDD embodies the pinnacle of excellence, integrity, proactive behavior, and commitment to diversity, inclusion, and civility, while aligning with MSM’s core values and objectives. This role demands a customer-focused approach, flexibility, and a dedication to dismantling operational silos throughout the School, integrating an equity perspective into all of MSM’s endeavors, particularly in innovation, focusing on cultural shifts and personnel development. Responsibilities include ensuring seamless and effective operations school-wide, preemptively addressing issues and resolving them as they arise, and contributing to MSM’s growth through strategic planning and engagement, drawing insights from current trends in higher education, medicine, and public health sectors.

The IBDD boasts a proven track record of entrepreneurial success in both corporate and private sectors, marked by a data-driven mindset, technical acumen, and proficiency in generative artificial intelligence, virtual/augmented reality, and other emerging technologies positioned to improve healthcare. With a strong inclination towards collaboration, the IBDD adeptly coordinates and aligns various projects within the institution and beyond, employing a systemic approach to lean change management and fostering partnerships within IMIN to spearhead transformation within MSM’s innovation ecosystem. This role is pivotal, acting as a bridge for professionals in transition to explore new opportunities, thus offering a platform for professional growth. Furthermore, the IBDD will engage with diverse stakeholders across the School, the Atlanta University Center Consortium ( AUCC ), and external academic, corporate, community, and practice leaders, as well as a range of organizations in the private and public sectors.

Innovation & Business Development Director: Impact & Innovation

The IBDD is a strategic partner to various senior leaders and builds consensus in advancing health equity by simulating better social and economic outcomes using technical algorithms to make a difference in communities at large. In this capacity, proposing solutions, advising, communicating and debating issues that are vital to the continued success and reputation of the School are a significant aspect of this role.

Innovation & Business Development Director ( IBDD ) focuses on co-building an ecosystem of entrepreneurial ideation opportunities includes several key points:

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Human-Centered Design & User Experience:
  • Lead projects with a focus on user experience design, ensuring solutions are accessible, intuitive, and effectively meet the needs of diverse populations, particularly those underserved by current healthcare systems.   1. Innovation and Product Strategy:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive product strategy, encompassing the entire lifecycle from ideation through development, launch, and evaluation, with an emphasis on emerging technologies and their potential to address health disparities.
  1. Product and Portfolio Management:
  • Oversee a portfolio of innovation projects, applying rigorous project and product management methodologies to ensure timely delivery, relevance, and impact.
  1. Machine Learning Applications:
  • Harness the capabilities of machine learning, to analyze health data, improve healthcare delivery, tailor health interventions to individual needs, and other use cases.
  1. Entrepreneurship and Venture Creation:
  • Foster an entrepreneurial environment that encourages the exploration of new ventures in health technology, securing funding, and partnerships to bring promising ideas to fruition.
  1. Emerging Technology Exploration:
  • Act as a thought leader in identifying and integrating emerging technologies into MSM’s healthcare and educational ecosystems. Spearhead the adoption of AI, VR/AR, blockchain, IoMT etc., across MSM’s healthcare and education sectors. By championing innovation, the IBDD aims to improve healthcare access, efficiency, and outcomes with cutting-edge solutions.
  1. Collaborative Tech-Driven Projects:
  • Foster partnerships with tech companies, startups, and academic institutions to pilot and scale projects that apply these technologies in real-world healthcare settings. This involves not only the technical application of AI and emerging technologies but also the strategic alignment of these projects with the overall mission of advancing health equity. Through collaborative innovation, the IBDD will ensure that MSM remains a leader in leveraging technology for social good.
  1. Management / Supervision and Mentoring:
  • Has a proven track record of effective supervision and mentoring. Guides and nurtures emerging talent (interns) in IMIN , linked with a strategic mindset for fostering innovation and growth within the innovation ecosystem, which includes career development, mind-mapping options for career pathways linked to social determinants of health.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a field relevant to human-centered design, or computer science, with a strong foundation in machine learning and its applications in healthcare.

  • Minimum of 8-10 years in roles of increasing responsibility within the tech or healthcare innovation space, with proven success in product strategy, project management, and the application of machine learning technologies.

  • Demonstrated ability to ideate, develop, and scale innovative products or services, with a preference for those that have addressed health inequities or have been applied in healthcare settings.

  • Deep knowledge of and experience with AI methodologies, along with proficiency in product strategy, product management and development tools.

  • Exceptional ability to lead cross-functional teams, mentor emerging talent, and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders, including academic, corporate, and community partners.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Possesses the capability to understand and oversee complex programs from a strategic viewpoint, articulating a clear vision for the institution, guiding the team, and setting goals that are in harmony with the institution’s impact objectives and financial strategies.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing the expectations of team members, including those in managerial and senior positions, and nurturing relationships to foster talent development through innovative career pathways.

  • Exhibits exceptional listening skills and a keen sensitivity to the needs and responsibilities of partners, faculty, staff, and students.

  • Embodies a culture of inclusive excellence, displaying integrity, profound knowledge, wisdom, and the flexibility to operate in challenging settings.

Immunization Requirements

It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment. If employment will commence during Flu Season, MSM requires all individuals to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless granted an exemption. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain an exemption from MSM will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
