Position Summary
Position Summary:
The Surgery Residency Program Director and Vice Chair of Education will hold a critical leadership position in the Department of Surgery. This individual will be responsible for the overall management of the general surgery residency program, ensuring compliance with ACGME standards and promoting a comprehensive, evidence-based curriculum that prepares residents for successful careers in surgery. Additionally, they will lead departmental educational initiatives, including faculty development, medical student education in surgery, and the integration of innovative teaching methods.
Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications:
Medical Degree: MD or DO degree, with Board Certification in General Surgery.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in academic medicine, with demonstrated expertise in surgical education and administration. Prior experience as a residency program director or associate director is strongly preferred.
Educational Leadership: Proven track record of effective leadership in medical education, with experience in curriculum development, faculty mentorship, and program evaluation.

Key Responsibilities:
Residency Program Director Responsibilities
Leadership and Administration: Oversee all aspects of the general surgery residency program, including recruitment, curriculum development, clinical rotations, and resident evaluation. Ensure adherence to ACGME requirements and prepare for regular program evaluations and site visits.
Curriculum Development: Develop, implement, and continuously improve a curriculum that aligns with current surgical practices and educational best practices, incorporating simulation, research opportunities, and hands-on clinical experiences.
Resident Mentorship and Wellness: Provide mentorship and support to residents in both professional and personal development. Foster a culture of well-being, resilience, and balance within the residency program.
Assessment and Feedback: Implement robust resident assessment strategies, including formative and summative evaluations, and provide feedback to residents to support growth and skill acquisition.
Diversity and Inclusion: Promote an inclusive environment within the residency program, fostering a supportive atmosphere that celebrates diversity and reflects MSM’s mission of addressing health inequities.
Vice Chair of Education Responsibilities
Strategic Educational Leadership: Lead the strategic planning and implementation of educational initiatives for medical students, residents, and faculty within the Department of Surgery.
Faculty Development: Develop and coordinate faculty development programs focused on teaching skills, mentoring, and career development. Encourage faculty to engage in educational research and scholarship.
Medical Student Education: Oversee and enhance the surgery curriculum for medical students, including clinical clerkships, elective rotations, and surgical interest groups. Collaborate with MSM leadership to align the curriculum with institutional goals.
Innovation in Education: Integrate innovative and evidence-based teaching methods, including simulation, virtual learning, and interprofessional education, to enhance learning outcomes and resident preparedness.
Community Outreach and Service Learning: Develop educational programs that involve community outreach and service, emphasizing the Department’s commitment to addressing health disparities and increasing access to surgical care in underserved communities.

Immunization
Immunization Requirements
It is MSM’s Immunization policy that all Prospective Employees are required to provide proof that they are vaccinated against COVID -19 prior to commencement of employment. If employment will commence during Flu Season, MSM requires all individuals to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless granted an exemption. Failure to provide proof of vaccination for any required vaccines or obtain an exemption from MSM will result in rescission of a candidate’s offer of employment or disciplinary action up to and including termination.
