Summary

The job responsibilities of a Senior Quality Assurance Technician may represent multiple facets of responsibility within the Quality Assurance team. Those items of responsibility are included below.

Responsibilities

  • First point of contact for Customer Care complaints.

  • Subject Matter Expert, Infinity QS SPC software.

  • Subject Matter Expert, M3 Quality Systems transactions.

  • Works with Supply Chain and Finance for monthly reporting of at-risk inventory as well as ingredients and finished goods hold status.

  • Responsible for releasing and holding finished goods and ingredients in M3.

  • Works with U.S. Portfolio Coordinator concerning product releases and lead times.

  • Point of contact for Regulatory Affairs and export testing requirements.

  • Prepare reports and review data (cpk’s, trend analysis, etc.) for process improvements.

  • Maintains deviation requests for ingredients and finished goods.

  • Responsible for scheduling and documentation of Trace Exercises.

  • Document flow and data management to include data entry and reporting, usage decisions, product holds, ingredient holds, and trend analysis.

  • Responsible for HACCP maintenance, ongoing HACCP reassessment, monitoring and verification.

  • Ensures that all controlled documentation is current, legible, readily understood, complete and accurate, and in compliance with all applicable procedures and specifications.

  • Identify any food safety and HACCP-related work requests generated from internal food safety audits, sanitation monitoring, pre-op inspections, 3rd party audits, or any food safety failures.

  • Updates SOPs and forms as necessary from HACCP reassessments, program changes, etc.

  • Conducts monthly audits to monitor and identify gaps or areas for improvement.

  • Conducts pre-requisite program reassessment and audit.

  • Prepare and support various audits including 3 rd party and internal audits.

  • Performs record verification & CCP operator competence verification duties.

  • Ensures compliance with Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standard audit requirements (i.e. Safe Quality Foods [SQF] certification) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles.

  • Reviews and approves corrective action plans for resolution of audit non-conformance reports.

  • Conducts periodic internal audits to verify compliance with established program requirements.

  • Periodically monitors and audits facility personnel to ensure all established food safety operating procedures are being followed.

  • Facilitates the maintenance of SQF and HACCP audit compliance systems and ensures their integrity through validation and verification.

  • Assists in the development and execution of verification programs required to validate regulatory requirements.

  • Helps to define risk categories and ensures their prioritization in the development of processes.

  • Assists in the development of general food safety and regulatory compliance standards.

  • Manages activities in establishing and executing effective food defense plans within the organization by collaborating with facility management and corporate liaisons. Acts as a qualified consultant on all food safety related matters.

  • Oversees various process improvement initiatives to better ensure ongoing compliance.

  • Develop & maintain policies and SOP’s to follow regulatory and/or external food safety certification requirements, changes in processes/equipment, and/or facility/corporate direction.

  • Responsible for overall coordination of controlled documentation for DogStar® kitchens.

  • Performs the Document Control function using the SharePoint system, including but not limited to electronic tracking, signature acknowledgment, workflow initiation, and communicating with DogStar® staff for gaps and/or outstanding document needs.

  • Supports all areas of the kitchen regarding document control including documentation associated with installation/implementation of new equipment.

  • Works with kitchen personnel for documentation creation and amendments as required.

  • Review of documentation to ensure that formatting procedures are synonymous as well as review for semantics/language changes.

  • Performs self-audits of document control system and ensures that the current revisions are available.

  • Investigates and responds to corrective actions related to document control, training and audit requirements.

  • Responsible for developing training materials and providing training for kitchen associates in food safety systems including HACCP, Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Documentation Practices, Cleaning & Sanitation, Customer Complaints, EMP, Product Quality, Food Defense or any changes in the process that may affect food safety.

  • Supports Quality Assurance Supervisor in the IQ, OQ, and PQ (Installation, Operational, and Performance Qualifications) of new instrumentation and equipment set up in the laboratory as assigned.

  • Performs specialized technical procedures.

  • Evaluates work performed by Quality Assurance Technicians for quality control and GLP/GDP compliance.

  • Addresses procedural and technical laboratory problems as they arise.

  • Ensures adherence to laboratory and facility quality control programs.

  • Responsible for the systematic and physical receipt and shipments to the kitchen of raw materials.

  • Third-party warehousing liaison for all incoming and outgoing ingredients/raw materials.

  • Supports Quality Assurance Supervisor to ensure proper evaluation and sampling techniques are applied to inbound ingredients as set forth in the applicable SOPs.

  • Strict adherence to GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices), both personnel and facility practices.

  • Supports DogStar® to achieve and maintain regulatory compliance of third-party warehousing, including but not limited to SQF certification standards and EU approval associated with third-party storage.

  • Works as the liaison among Operations/Quality Assurance/Supply Chain to ensure timely decision-making regarding status of off-quality ingredients and/or packaging materials.

  • Maintains, and communicates as required, all documentation/applicable records as it relates to third-party receiving warehouses.

  • Maintains inventory control, both systematic (M3) and physical cycle counts as required.

  • Maintains FEFO (First Expiry, First Out) inventory.

  • Creates Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and corresponding CAPA (Corrective Action/Preventive Action).

  • Makes recommendations for continuous improvement.

  • Assists with mock recalls.

  • Assists with all 3rd party and regulatory audits.

  • Leads by example utilizing the Company’s Core Values (TRAIL) as the basis for decision-making--this includes following all Company policies, standards and specifications.

  • Performs additional assignments per the direction of a Quality Assurance Supervisor or the Quality Assurance Manager.

Requirements

  • S. Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or related field; work experience shall be considered in lieu of a degree.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, GLPs, GMPs, Food Safety, and Quality.

  • Knowledge of process control and general food manufacturing principles.

  • Effective written and verbal skills.

  • Experience writing protocols and SOP’s.

  • Ability to set priorities, utilize and coordinate resources, and manage projects from start to finish with little or no supervision.

  • Ability to effectively work on a team, both as a leader and member.

  • Proficient in documentation and workflow.

  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills.

Working Conditions

  • 24/7 availability may be required.

  • Lifting or moving up to 50 pounds may be required.

  • Willing to work any shift as necessary.

  • Travel to off-site locations may be required.

  • Exposure to a pet food production environment that includes dust, noise, odors, and/or fluctuating temperatures.
