UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN CNC Repair and Maintenance Technician/CNC Machinist in Austin, Texas

Maintenance: Specialized repair of Hurco machines, with a focus on diagnosing intermittent electrical issues and performing emergency repairs aimed at swiftly restoring operational functionality. Regular maintenance of Hurco machines, including management of cutting fluids, coolants, filters, and other routine wear items. Preventative diagnosis and replacement of routine wear items, such as detecting leaks and replacing seals and protective way guarding to ensure the integrity of the Hurco, Mori Seiki, Mazak, and manual machines. Proficiently troubleshoot and efficiently repair Mazak and Mori Seiki CNC turning centers, focusing on mechanical and electrical issues to maintain machine performance and reliability. Develop and implement a maintenance schedule for all CNC and manual machines, ensuring preventive maintenance and periodic checks are completed in a timely and efficient manner. Develop a database to track and manage the inventory of machine wear components, sourcing cost-effective replacements to maintain a stock of these essential parts. Diagnose machine issues, coordinate with external suppliers for repairs, and order necessary machine parts and tooling. Assist other machinists with machine upkeep and organization to maintain a streamlined and efficient shop.Database Creation, Operational Organization Management : Create a robust system from the ground up to inventory, mark, and track all machining raw materials in compliance with ISO 9001 standards, including generating traceability reports. Bring organization and sustained cleanliness to the material storage and handling area, along with the continuous management of incoming material shipments. Track and account for material usage, scrap, and waste to account for the material consumption. Initiate and structure a tool crib to centralize and manage the inventory of necessary cutting tools for machining work, such as carbide end mills, drills, taps, indexable tooling, and inserts. Create storage, access, and inventory systems for both materials and tooling. Organize and implement a daily maintenance schedule to ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of the machine shop. Operate heavy equipment like forklifts and cranes for handling materials. Implement lean manufacturing practices to streamline operational processes and enhance efficiency.Machining/Fabrication: Engage in fabrication and welding tasks, notably TIG welding, for constructing custom fixtures from materials such as steel, stainless steel, and aluminum. Operate rotary tables and rotary indexers, along with manual machines for initial machining tasks like facing in a mill, and material preparation task. For example, the qualification of stock by facing in a mill, first operation turning, or drilling on a lathe. Design and fabricate custom cutting tools for CNC lathe operations. Prepare materials for CNC operations, which include sawing, deburring, and managing the sizing and storage of raw materials. Proactively participate in the improvement and innovation of machining processes, seeking new methods for efficient component fabrication. Willingness and aptitude for mastering Edgecam programming software and CAD modeling. Demonstrate eagerness to develop skills in mathematical, mechanical, and computer-based applications for machining. Read and interpret 3D CAD models, geometric dimensioning, tolerancing, and blueprint interpretation as needed to complete other assigned tasks. Act as backup CMM programmer/operator and 3D printer operator/maintainer.Other related functions as assigned.
