The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) invites you to apply today to be considered for a position that provides customer service to the citizens of Maryland every day. The MTA is one of the largest transit systems in the United States and is seeking dynamic and energetic individuals to join the MTA team.

The MTA is recruiting a Chief of Maintenance in the Office of Fare Collection. The Chief of Maintenance directs all functions relating to fare collection equipment testing, installation, maintenance, and repair to ensure the reliable collection of revenue from buses, light rail, and the Metro subway.

The Chief of Maintenance leads employees who work 24/7 to ensure all revenue-collecting equipment is in working order and bus-related revenue is properly vaulted.

The Chief of Maintenance will monitor trends reported via fare collection reports to proactively identify existing or potential issues for maintenance team response.

The Chief of Maintenance is expected to research and recommend new technologies and approaches to ensure the reliable and cost-effective repair and maintenance of fare collection equipment.

This position interacts with multiple MTA departments and outside vendors, so the candidate must be able to work well within and across organizations to quickly resolve issues and assure service to the public.

This position may work with vendors to manage maintenance projects as obsolete equipment is replaced, so project management knowledge and experience are a plus.

The Chief of Maintenance must understand and review maintenance practices and ensure that the Americans with Disabilities Act regulations are followed.

The Chief of Maintenance must uphold federal and state regulations relating to the Office of Fare Collection including revenue handling, safety, security, and purchasing policies.

This position will also ensure that MTA policies and the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) are followed.

This position reports to the Director of Fare Collections.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Hiring, training, and managing of union and management staff within the department including recruitment, interviewing, scheduling, and discipline.

  • Assist in the preparation and monitoring of the departmental budget.

  • Outsourcing of certain fare collection hardware via maintenance contracts.

  • Facility layouts/space allocation within the Office of Fare Collection

  • Some purchasing duties including spare parts and testing equipment as an example.

  • Track and administer warranty claims for revenue equipment.

  • Problem-solving to keep fare collection equipment in service.

  • Interface with both internal and external customers.

Qualifications

Education : Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six years of experience in administrative staff or professional work. This includes five years of progressive experience in transportation, maintenance, operations, or a related field, with three years of lead or supervisory experience; strong technical competence regarding equipment operation; and the ability to knowledgably discuss equipment issues with engineers, IT professionals, and equipment manufacturer representatives. *

Notes:

  1. Additional experience in administrative or professional work may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

  2. Additional graduate-level education at an accredited college or university may be substituted at the rate of 30 semester credit hours on a year-to-year basis for the required general experience.

  3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant on a year-for-year basis for the required education and experience.

  4. They must have the ability to: work in challenging weather conditions, lift 50 pounds, climb ladders, hills, walk on ballast and train tracks. Manage excessive standing, bending, crawling, carrying tools and equipment for long a distance to respond to emergencies at remote locations and/or participate in planning or delivering emergency response training.

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
