Johns Hopkins University Director of Development, Carey Business School in Baltimore, Maryland

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

The Director of Development at the Carey Business School is a critical leader on the Development and Alumni Relations team. This position manages a team of 2-3 front-line fundraisers, reports directly to the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations and focuses on meeting the philanthropic goals established to support Carey’s academic priorities. The Director works collaboratively with other members of DAR to leverage support for fundraising, student recruitment, and institutional advancement efforts.

Key responsibilities:

  • Focusing on commitments of $50,000+ with an expectation of raising $1,000,000 or more per year.

  • Overseeing the direct fundraising efforts of the school, including direct response appeals and portfolio-based gift officers.

  • Managing a personal portfolio of major gift prospects and being expected to conduct a minimum of 75 cultivation and solicitation visits a year, including the preparation of written proposals

  • Working collaboratively across Johns Hopkins University and also being expected to build strong relationships across the Carey Business School’s departments and faculty leadership and to develop a substantive understanding of the Carey Business School’s funding needs, as defined by the Dean and Management Council.

  • Identifying and evaluating the giving potential of high-end affiliated and unaffiliated annual and major gift prospects through personal visits and research; and managing the cultivation and solicitation of planned giving prospects.

  • Working closely with the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations to staff the School’s dean, as well as the Dean’s Advisory Council and other boards.

  • In consultation with the Associate Dean, the Director of Development will develop and manage the annual development plan for the Carey Business School including setting goals, developing work plans, monitoring efforts and evaluating results.

  • Attending university-wide development meetings, and participating in task forces and committees including liaising with the University’s foundation and corporate relations office

  • Participating in the department’s budget planning process and writing and managing the production of special fundraising publications such as campaign case statements and brochures.

  • With the Associate Dean, contributing to innovative team building and exceptional leadership to support a robust and highly productive team environment for Carey.

  • Donor travel.

  • Performing other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Seven years related professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree

  • Seven years of development experience in higher education, including cultivation and solicitation of major gifts and supervisory management experience.

  • Strong management knowledge and skills, and superb written and oral communications skills are essential.

  • Proven fundraising ability, knowledge of major prospect management, planned giving instruments and the ability to exercise independent judgment.
