Job Description: Geotechnical Landfill Engineer, supporting both short-duration and multi-year landfill engineering projects ranging in budget from $30,000 to $1,000,000. Works with multi-disciplinary design and construction teams to solve problems in the construction of landfills and other heavy-civil projects. Responsibilities also include: Preparing specialized geotechnical engineering calculations (settlement, slope stability, earth retention, subsurface flow) Writing technical reports, drafting and editing technical specifications, reading construction drawings, critiquing construction drawings, contributing to project proposals. Visiting project sites to inspect geotechnical and geosynthetic components, participating in client meetings, researching specialized topics in geotechnical landfill engineering, reviewing and critiquing reports and calculations, analyzing data and synthesizing conclusions, contributing to procedure development, and participating in department meetings. Depending on job performance, successful candidates may qualify for additional project, technical, and management responsibility. Qualifications include: 1 to 6 years of experience in civil engineering, working with earthwork, foundation, earth retention, embankment, and/or landfill projects. Must be capable of registering as a Professional Engineer by a state licensing board following NCEES Model Law within 4 years of hire. Master's degree in Civil Engineering, focused on geotechnical engineering. Additional post-graduate degrees or studies preferred. Knowledge of geotechnical engineering practices. Knowledge of landfill engineering practices. Organization, written communication, and oral communication skills. Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office. Experience with advanced geotechnical analysis software (slope stability, earth retention, finite element analysis) preferred. Motivation to participate in professional society technical activities and advance state of practice preferred. Must be able to work constructively in diverse teams including engineers, technicians, and non-technical personnel.
