GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

The Telecommunications and Networks Support Specialist supports the operation and maintenance of the telecommunications distribution system and associated hardware that support voice, data, video including cellular and wireless. This includes installation and maintenance of network hardware and software, documentation, assessment, network monitoring, network hardware backups, security, and codes compliance.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Individual Responsibilities

  1. Support the daily operations, maintenance and tier 2 / 3 support of the following systems and associated activities:
  • Information networks including voice (TDM and VoIP), data, video, cable, cellular and wireless;

  • Remote access to college resources and at-a-distance access.

  • Telecommunications Distribution System (TDS), from the service entrance facility to the work area, including maintenance and documentation. Assist in ensuring that the TDS and networks meet applicable codes and follow industry best practices.

  • College life safety systems infrastructure and daily operations including intercom, mass notification, Area of Rescue, and blue light telephony systems. Support Campus Safety daily operations through support of E-911 notification systems, video security cameras, cellular devices that support high priority and preemption, and continuity of contact of the College community and public with Campus Safety staff.

  • Cellular phones and other devices including recommendations, procurement, provisioning, and mobile device management.

  • Testing, documentation, operation, and software currency of telecommunications hardware including, but not limited to routers, switches, remote power controllers, uninterruptible power supplies including battery maintenance and replacement, environmental monitoring systems, wireless controllers and access points, telephony hardware, remote access systems, firewall security gateways and management servers including policy modifications, software upgrades, and IPS/IDS modifications.

  • Resilient and highly available access to all telecommunications infrastructure including use of uninterruptible power supplies, environmental and power management systems that protect the infrastructure.

  • The backup infrastructure to maintain reliable backups of telecommunications hardware that are well-tested and available locally and offsite as needed.

  • Monitor all telecommunication and associated systems via on-site and off-premises modalities including logging, alerts, and auditing.

  • Support the College Helpdesk using industry best practices. Respond to telecommunications trouble tickets in accordance with agreed to service response times.

  1. Serve on project teams requiring telecommunications and networks expertise to complete projects within scope and on time.

    1. Interact with vendors, suppliers, and colleagues to evaluate product offerings, training programs, and technical service practices; acquire technical assistance as required to perform duties efficiently and effectively.

    2. Explore, evaluate, and support new services and technologies for the college community as needed in consultation with the Director of Telecommunications and Networks, Computer Services team, and related College departments.

    3. Use the department's IT Service Management (ITSM) system for resolving network related incidents, problems, and service requests.

    4. Work collaboratively with IT Staff and College stakeholders to test and maintain Disaster Recovery and Continuity of Operations protocols and procedures.

    5. Participate in the annual review of the GCC telecommunications and networks infrastructure and make recommendations for replacement, consolidation, or expansion of these systems as needed.

B. General Requirements and Teams

  1. Perform incidental duties associated with day-to-day functions of the offices of Computer Services, many of which entail front-line interaction with campus technology users, both in person and remotely. These tasks include but are not limited to resolving computing problems for walk-in users, answering the telephone, taking messages, covering for staff absences, , and ensuring received invoices from contractors and vendors are accurate and work is properly completed prior to submission for payment processing.

    1. Contribute to the publication of technical and informational newsletters, electronic communications, bulletins, and ITS web pages where appropriate.

    2. Attend training seminars and business meetings to extend specialized skills for staff and project management as approved by the Director of Telecommunications and Networks.

    3. Explore emerging technologies in telecommunications and networks through readings in professional journals and product documentation.

    4. All other duties as assigned.

    Job Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

Associate's degree in Computer Systems and Network Technologies or related field, Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience

A minimum of two (2) years' experience (three (3) with an Associate's) with voice (TDM and VoIP), data, video, cable, cellular and wireless, network monitoring / security / software currency, and telecommunications infrastructure.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Good written, oral, and organizational skills; demonstrated customer service orientation; ability to function at a high-level in a fast-paced environment; ability to collaborate with multiple departments/teams (e.g. Buildings & Grounds, Media & Academic Technology, Systems, User Services); ability to work independently and problem-solve; proficiency using the Microsoft 365 suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams); must demonstrate commitment and ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents in support of campus and department mission; is mindful of and supports accessibility solutions that can accommodate all individuals to use GCC facilities without barriers, both digitally and physically; ability to maintain flexible work schedule to accommodate service demands, including evenings and weekends.

Additional Information:

RELATIONSHIPS:

This position reports to the Director of Telecommunications & Networks.

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a full time, year-round position at 35 hours per week and is compensated at a rate of $$59,556.04. Position will be required to work up to two (2) weekend days per month as well as occasional holiday work for major maintenance days. Salary, benefits, and conditions of employment are as set by the GEA contract.
