Job Description
MAIN FUNCTION:
Performs a variety of clerical assignments in the Diet Office. Processes diet change orders, new admissions, discharges, and transfers. Reviews daily computerized tray sheets for diet order changes; communicates pertinent information to Clinical Dietetics Staff. Responsible for phone coverage in the Diet Office. Prepares special therapeutic diet menus for patient delivery.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Acts as liaison to patients and nursing staff via professional and courteous telephone coverage to record and facilitate multiple changes throughout the day.
Responsible for accurately preparing complex diet orders by thorough, effective, and efficient processing of computerized and verbal diet changes, new diets, admissions, transfers and discharges.
Communicates pertinent information and changes to Clinical Dietetics staff.
Responsible for implementing diet order changes upon receipt of orders and adjusting standard diets to comply with nutrient prescriptions of at least 50 different diet orders/combinations.
Thoroughly and accurately processes all patient menus prior to breakfast, lunch and supper traylines; checking diet order, diet changes, transfers, new admissions, NPO's, supplement additions or changes.
Responsible for controlling tray order, which dictates trayline flow, tray passing order to patients and thus affects food temperatures.
Responsible for patient satisfaction by coordinating early trays, late trays, food preferences, supplements and special requests.
Responsible for updating and checking diet requisitions against tray sheets for accuracy then utilizing them to prepare selective menus with instructions from Clinical Dietetics staff for patient meal service.
Responsible for controlling rehabilitation patient trays for eating skills groups with Physical Therapy, Emergency Room, Day Surgery, and Occupational Therapy functional assessment trays.
Responsible for contributing to accurate meal counts by tracking and reporting additional counts for hot, cold, nourishment and bakery production groups.
Responsible for a wide variety of clerical functions including accurate menu ordering, accurate menu heading and editing, and phone coverage, which affect what the patient receives and can affect a patient’s medical condition.
Responsible for assembling meal trays and food items as required, in conformance with accurate portion standards and in compliance with any nutrient restriction of diet order.
Has working knowledge of all kitchen position functions in order to complete job and respond to patient/nursing questions, concerns, needs and comments.
Knows and follows sanitation codes and other applicable regulations concerning handling of food, equipment, work area and hygiene.
Promotes and fosters the mission and philosophy of the Hospital during performance of job duties and community activities.
Actively supports and participates in Hospital's Performance Improvement endeavors.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Is responsible for attending all annual mandatory educational programs as required by position.

EDUCATION:
High School graduate required. Ability to type accurately and/or computer operation skills are desirable.
Coursework in Basic Nutrition and Basic Diet Therapy is strongly preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Working knowledge of office skills, etiquette, grammar, spelling and punctuation. Minimum of one year quantity food service experience strongly preferred. Basic familiarity with therapeutic diets is required.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
No CPR required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This job requires a person who is able to be on their feet for long periods of time. Reaches, lifts, stoops, and carries food and kitchen equipment. Subject to frequent interruptions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to hand a very fast-paced work routine sometimes handling several tasks simultaneously.

EXPOSURE CATEGORY:
Category III: Tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. And Category I tasks are not a condition of employment.
