About this position

This position is located in District 61/Unit 751/East Baton Rouge Parish of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Electronic Technician Supervisor. The overall function of this position is to install, repair and maintain traffic signal equipment and other electrical components located throughout District 61. This work includes making programming changes to signal controllers and electrical repairs to various signal components. Repairs to electrical service for all District 61 facilities are also included as well as repairs to movable bridge equipment and navigational lighting on all bridges over navigational waterways with the district, which is essential for safe navigation and to minimize the risk of bridge damage from errant vessels.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Three years of experience in the maintenance or repair of mechanical or electronic office equipment, precision machinery, or electronic and electrical systems or in the installation, repair or maintenance of computer equipment or systems (hardware and/or software).

SUBSTITUTIONS:

Training in a vocational-technical school or military school will substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience on the basis of one year of training for one year of experience.

College training with at least six semester hours per year in electronics or computer science will substitute for the experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience.

CompTIA A+ Certification will substitute for one year of the required experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Must possess an appropriate Federal Communications Commission (FCC) radio-telephone license when working with marine and aviation transmitting equipment or with radar.

May be required to have technician certification by the National Association of Business and Educational Radio (NABER).

May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver's license at the time of appointment.

NOTE:

The maintenance or repair of electronic or electrical systems includes the repair or maintenance of radio or television broadcasting equipment; or electronic equipment such as radios, televisions or VCRs.

ELECTRONIC TECHNICIAN ADVANCED UNIT 751

The overall function of this position is to install, repair, and maintain traffic signal equipment and other electrical components located throughout District 61. Incumbent is responsible for all electrical maintenance work within the District 61 area. This work includes making programming changes to signal controllers and electrical repairs to various signal components. Repairs to electrical service for all District 61 facilities are also included as well as repairs to movable bridge equipment and navigational lighting on all bridges over navigational waterways. The efficient performance of signal related duties in this position has a direct impact on traffic operations within the District, both in terms of minimizing congestion and in terms of quickly repairing malfunctions that pose safety problems.

This position is located in District 61/Unit 751/East Baton Rouge Parish of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Electronic Technician Supervisor. The incumbent must be self-motivated and be able to perform unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. While in official capacity, DOTD employees must comply with applicable Louisiana and Civil Service Jaws, rules and regulations, as well as DOTD policies, procedures, manuals, and directives.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

65% Performs all functions and duties of Electronic Technician at the Advanced level overseeing, instructing, and training Electronic Technician Trainees and Electronic Technicians on a functional basis. Performs more complex, technical or highly skilled tasks with electronic controllers. Maintain an inventory of parts for immediate and emergency repairs. Prepares traffic signal work orders in case of testimony, signal history, and/or operations. Prepares loop report chart for traffic engineers and contractors prior to construction. Makes field observations during signal construction when appointed by a traffic engineer. Prepare reporting forms for traffic engineers to determine pavement conditions for new loop installation. Installs, updates, and modifies most complex components and systems to equipment and check for proper operation of microcomputer-controlled traffic signals. Office computers are used for maintaining signal files for signalized locations throughout the District. Computers are used to monitor signalized intersections and video equipment I facility automated systems through means of fiber I communication equipment to monitor conditions or make changes when required. Laptop computers are used in the field to setup video cameras and detection zones, transferring data and maintaining signal files as well. Makes programming changes to electronic traffic signal controllers. Maintains signal interconnect communication systems. Constructs traffic signal heads with wiring and LED modules. Installs and maintains video cameras and electronic controls thru computer software, monitors in traffic signals for the detection and presence of vehicles. Oversee preventive maintenance operations as required, including transportation equipment on a periodic basis.

30% Performs all functions and duties of Electronic Technician at the Advanced level overseeing, instructing, and training Electronic Technician Trainee and Electronic Technicians on a functional basis. Makes repairs to and/or replacement of electronic and electrical/mechanical components needed to insure correct signal operation. Erects electronic signal cabinets. Maintains and installs electronic and electrical systems on moveable and stationary bridges, which includes five Mississippi River Bridges for aviation and navigation lights with a minimum of 300 feet, which involves climbing. Installs electrical equipment such as motors, switches, lighting three phase electronic monitors for electrical protection, high and low voltage transformers with 7200 volts and lower also adjust voltage, plus maintains this equipment. Maintains, dismantles and repairs generators. Maintains repairs and installs electrical limits for locking systems with wedges and barriers to ensure safe Marine and Vehicle transportation. Maintains repairs and installs electrical and electronic systems on pump stations, electronic monitor of motors. Monitor programs of generators operations and system checks, and maintenance repairs. Constructs and maintains new electrical services for electric generators and portable buildings and their electrical circuits systems. Provide guidance to private contractors on circuitry layout of buildings and facilities. Installs and repairs rigid electrical conduit,

pulls in conductors, assembles buss bars, phase out and converts conductors for electrical services. Uses standard electrical tools and equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, meggers, watt meters, and recording instruments to locate and correct electrical problems. Maintains and repairs bridge hydraulic systems such as pumps, cylinders, hoses, filters, control valves. Repairs air conditioning units (windows and central units). Draws, interprets, updates, and files electrical drawings, also records electrical maintenance forms during annual inspections on buildings and grounds for annual audits.

5% Will be required to perform other duties as necessary, including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
