Service Capabilities sit at the heart of the Consumer Telco Platforms. The Service Capability API set includes Fault, Billing, Identity and Case Management which are key enablers for Service transformation to New IT supporting Consumer’s ambition to simplify experiences for our customers and drive up digital self-serve adoption.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will be part of a wider Agile team that are responsible for delivering the ongoing business transformation in New EE as well as the day to day operations of the platform in life.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead, Coach, and inspire a team of software engineers.

  • Build and maintain an engineering culture that fosters innovation and creativity while delivering high quality software with predictability and reliability.

  • Drive the implementation of the Consumer Telco Capability roadmap meeting the needs of both Consumer and Digital transformations.

  • Navigate conflicting priorities and demands within a resource constrained environment making strategic decisions that optimise the allocation of resources.

  • Provide clear communications within the team and to wider stakeholders on progress, risks, issues etc. ensuing transparency and facilitating informed decision making.

  • Monitor, manage and ensure timely releases ensuring quality compliance at all times.

  • Oversee the definition and implementation of engineering standards and best practices.

  • Design and implement engineering and operational excellence initiatives, implementing metrics and processes for regular assessment and continual improvement.

  • Coordinate the evaluation and implementation of high-quality tools and automations to support continuous delivery and developer productivity.

  • Support the implementation of the Consumer Telco roadmap working closely with cross functional teams to define technical solutions that are architecturally compliant and address business needs.

  • Oversee technical decision making, technology choices and technical architecture balancing short term business objectives with long-term transformation goals.

  • Have a clear view at all times on technical debt and plans to resolve.

  • Develop 'best-in-class' engineering solutions ensuring services are well-defined and modularised, secure, reliable, diagnosable, actively monitored, scalable and reusable.

  • Perform complex debugging and troubleshooting of critical issues.

  • Consult on complex and strategic issues using acquired technical knowledge.

  • Champion, continuously develop and share with team, knowledge on emerging trends and changes in software engineering relevant to the area.

Skills

  • Technical knowledge and awareness of Telco BSS and the role of APIs in a microservice architecture.

  • Technical expertise in developing and operating a high volume critical business applications. Preferably a previous Java Springboot based implementation. Wider Opensource skills also desirable.

  • Awareness and experience of the full Software Development Life Cycle and modern software engineering principles.

  • Full versed in Software Development Concepts.

  • Experience of successfully leading a software engineering squad across multiple geographies and time zones to deliver high quality software though collaborative and agile ways of working.

  • Experience of successfully leading an In Life team for a business critical application. Covering release quality gates, change, incident and problem management processes etc.

  • The ability to train, coach and develop a team of junior software engineers.

  • Experience in managing people through the full employee lifecycle in a software engineering environment, including succession planning & performance management.
