Job Overview:
Under the supervision of the department Manager, the Communications Operator provides communication service by operating a telephone console within the current PBX in order to relay incoming, outgoing, and interoffice calls as well as relaying the proper page information throughout the health system.
Qualifications:
Required:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Previous experience in a telecommunications or customer service role
Proficiency in operating phone systems and/or computer-based switchboards
Strong verbal communication skills
Ability to handle high stress situations
Preferred:
Knowledge of hospital operations and medical terminology
English is a must, other languages are a
Scheduling Requirements
Status: Per Diem (Based on department needs)
Shift: Flexible (including nights, weekends, and holidays may be required)
Essential Functions:
Relays incoming and outgoing calls promptly and courteously
Handles callers professionally and helpfully
Monitors operations of telephone and paging systems
Ensures that telephone equipment is in good working order and that problems are reported to the proper departments
Monitors emergency alarms and medical alarms located in the office
Communicates medical and other information to authorized recipients
Operates the hospital s telecommunication systems ie, multi-line phone systems and computer-based switchboards and in-house paging system
Announces and beeps medical codes, disasters, and other emergencies in accordance with hospital and system policies
Maintain accurate records of emergency calls
Demonstrates a thorough awareness of and familiarity with information resources in the department
Works closely with other hospital staff to ensure seamless communication and patient satisfaction
This position requires working in a fast-paced hospital environment
This role may involve prolonged periods of sitting and using telecommunications equipment
