Guthrie Pharmacy Technician - Pharmacy Retail - Per Diem in Binghamton, New York

Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Director of Pharmacy or the Pharmacist and according to standard policies and procedures of the department, assists the pharmacist in the formulation, preparation, and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies and maintaining drug inventory. Records and maintains written records as required. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist. Experience: Onsite orientation and training is provided. Previous experience with computers is also desired. Must be a highly motivated self‐starter with excellent written and oral communication skills. Must have ability to deal with all types of people during periods of stress in a positive manner. Essential Functions: Compliance with rules and regulations of all federal, state, and local governments is a required. Performs routine inventory of medication and pharmaceutical supplies on daily, monthly, or yearly basis to maintain adequate and appropriate supplies in the pharmacy. Places orders with appropriate suppliers, receives, unpacks, and puts supplies away as needed. Removes outdated supplies from both the pharmacy and nursing units via quarterly inspection of all medication storage areas in the hospital. Assists in the maintenance of a clean and orderly environment. Participates in pharmacy orientation program and attends continuing education and inservice programs as required (mandatory hospital wide programs, mandatory department programs, and outside programs, etc.) Assists with the billing functions as directed by the hospital’s policies and procedures. Works on special projects as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy. Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department. Maintains “borrow/lend” records. Generates reports, pick lists, and labels as required. Familiar with the dosage forms and dosages appropriate for different age groups (infant, pediatrics, adolescent, adult, and geriatric). Fills physician orders, medication carts, or stocks requisitions accurately for pharmacist’s verification. Delivery of medications on an hourly basis, and sometimes more frequently, as well as with routine exchange of medication carts on a weekly basis. Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds. Measures, counts, and pours capsules, tablets, and liquids for compounding, packaging, and dispensing of medications and pharmaceutical products as supervised by a pharmacist. Prepares labels as per standard procedure for appropriate labeling of said products. Also prepares injectable medications according to established procedures (i.e., aseptic technique) as supervised by the pharmacist. Answers the telephone to receive, record, and/or provide information; provides basic information in response to inquiries concerning medications and pharmaceutical products, records information for processing of now and stat orders for patient use. Repackages bulk medications in unit‐dose packages, safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniques. Maintains appropriate records on compounded or repackaged medications as required by hospital or governmental regulations. Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned by Director of Pharmacy. Processes/maintains department’s billing function regarding patient charges; patient care charges. Assists with annual budget preparation. Assists with the management of inventory control, providing information as required in order to supply the OR, radiology, with the appropriate and adequate amounts of formulary medications and other pharmaceutical products. Assures, through invoice review that the best possible price has been obtained on all department purchases. Maintains price information on each item, via computer software program. Places orders with pharmaceutical manufacturers and wholesalers as required. Maintains liaison role with company representatives on behalf of the department. Maintains records on purchase orders written, processed, and received by department in a readily retrievable manner for review by Director and Chief Financial Officer. Assists in controlled substance surveillance by the review of all controlled substance log sheets. Lot sheets are compared to what was documented in computer system as administered to patient. Any discrepancies are brought to immediate attention of pharmacist on duty and pharmacy director.

Pay Range $17.51-$27.74/hr
