Typical hours: Tuesday to Saturday 8AM-5PM but may vary.

Weekends and holidays are required as needed.

The Aquatics Supervisor role is a key supervisory position City of Boca Raton aquatic facilities, for either The Swim Center or Meadows Park Pool, this position is responsible for oversight of the aquatic facilities and staff. Duties include professional and responsible work managing the day-to-day operations, as well as program development of instructional, recreational, competitive programs and events, pool and equipment maintenance, budgetary and administrative tasks, and personnel management.

The Aquatics Supervisor is responsible for planning, executing, and supervising aquatics programs, including management of the swim team. The Supervisor must ensure the safety and physical integrity of the assigned facility and amenities and is primarily responsible to uphold compliance with safety standards including to verify all staff certifications and facility licensure.

Under general supervision of the Aquatics Manager, the Aquatics Supervisor is responsible for all pool personnel, their scheduling and training, including full and part-time Pool Lifeguards.

Essential Functions

  • Selects, trains, motivates, supervises, and evaluates personnel; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; makes recommendations regarding discipline and termination.

  • Ensures that staff maintain the appropriate level of certifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities; develops and oversees in-service training schedule, staff manual and facility policies.

  • Oversees the coordination and development of staff work schedules, assignment of responsibilities, and the delivery of operational and maintenance programs.

  • Oversees the planning, organization, implementation, and instruction of a wide variety of aquatic related recreational activities, special events, and instructional programs.

  • Coordinates the fiscal operations of aquatics facility, including generating the required revenue as projected in the annual budget; prepares the annual operations and program budget.

  • Conducts routine inspections of the facility; identifies deficiencies in maintenance or operations; coordinates the implementation of appropriate actions for resolution; conducts re-inspections; ensures compliance with required/regulated operational standards.

  • Maintains budgetary, supply, equipment, and operational records regarding aquatic programs and facility activities; maintains inventory/ equipment lists.

  • Ensures water quality tests are performed and maintains proper water chemistry.

  • Instructs aquatic programs and leads aquatics camps as required.

  • Reviews and evaluates operations and procedures; identifies opportunities for improvement and implements changes; meets with management staff to identify and resolve problems.

  • Participates in the development and administration of the budget.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Community swimming pool operations including safety practices and procedures, pool maintenance, lifeguard functions, and general facility maintenance

  • First-aid practices related to water sports and pool activities

  • General office practices and procedures

Skill in:

  • Use of a variety of Microsoft Office Suite products to include Word, Excel, and Outlook, at an intermediate level.

  • Use of computers and software applications to a moderate degree of proficiency including but not limited to for use of payroll and timekeeping (Oracle), reservation and registration management (RecTrac)

  • Developing and managing budgets

  • Supervisory approaches for work direction, motivation, and disciplinary action.

  • Written and verbal communication, including to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to personnel accurately and concisely

    Ability to:

  • Perform water rescue functions.

  • Instruct swim lessons, aquatics programming, and lifeguard.

  • Maintain required certifications.

  • Correctly interpret and efficiently implement all applicable policies and procedures

  • Delegate, manage, supervise, lead and motivate to achieve goals

  • Train subordinates in proper lifeguarding techniques and methods

  • Work with toxic chemicals required for pool maintenance and sanitation safely

  • Prepare and maintain accurate records

  • Establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with personnel under supervision, city staff and officials, as well as the general public

  • Work a flexible work schedule that includes weekdays, weekends and evenings as needed.

  • Teach and pass American Red Cross certifications that are conducted internally for Bloodborne Pathogens, Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto-Injectors, Asthma Inhaler Training, Administering Emergency Oxygen, and Adapted Aquatics.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in parks and recreation, recreation or physical education, leisure services, or related field. Four years of direct experience may be substituted for degree requirement.

  • Three (3) years of professional aquatic programming and facility experience, including planning, supervising and managing aquatic programs, activities and facilities: supervision and evaluation of staff and facilities.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver’s License and the ability to drive a city owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding CPR/AED/First Aid for Professional Rescuers

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor

  • American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor

  • American Red Cross Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine

  • American Red Cross Administering Emergency Oxygen

  • National Recreation and Park Association Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO)

Additionally, must be able to obtain American Red Cross Lifeguard Management certification within six (6) months of hire.

Preferred Qualification:

  • State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Certified Parks Recreation Professional (CPRP) certification(s) are preferred.

BENEFITS SUMMARY

Full-Time Non-Bargaining Employees

ANNUAL LEAVE: Shall accrue prior to an employee attaining permanent status in the classified service, and may be used after six (6) months of employment at the sole discretion of the Department Head, but it shall not be paid out upon resignation or termination unless the employee has attained permanent status (one full year). The maximum accrual is 360 hours.

CASH OUT OF ANNUAL LEAVE: Employees who have attained permanent status shall be permitted to cash out up to forty (40) hours of accrued and unused Annual Leave, either in a single lump sum payment or two or more partial payments, each fiscal year.

SICK LEAVE: 8 hours per month. Any hours in excess of 960 will be paid off annually at 50%. Upon retirement, employees with a minimum of 5 years continuous service will receive 50% of sick leave balance. Termination for reasons other than retirement shall be entitled to payment for accrued, but unused sick leave, as follows:

HEALTH INSURANCE (Premiums): Employee Medical (Base Plan) - Paid 100% by City. Employee contributions are required for the buy up employee coverage plans. Employee Dental (DHMO or Basic PPO Plan) & Vision (Basic Plan) paid 100% by City. Employee contributions are required for the Employee + Dependent(s) for the Medical, Dental, & Vision Plan.

CONTINUOUS SERVICE BENEFIT: As of December 1 each year - Paid during the month of December.

RETIREMENT PLANS: The two pension/retirement options are listed below:

  • An option to enroll in a Defined Contribution Retirement Plan. The Defined Contribution Retirement Plan will not require a mandatory contribution. The City will contribute seven (7%) percent of the annual base wages annually. The vesting period for this plan shall be one (1) year from date of hire in the classified service, which coincides with your one-year probationary period.

  • An option to enroll in a Defined Benefit Retirement Plan option is available. There is a ten (10) year vesting period with a multiplier of 2.00% at normal retirement and a mandatory seven and three-quarters (7.75%) percent employee contribution.

  • The two (2) options will be fully explained prior to an irrevocable selection.

Optional: 457 Deferred Compensation Savings Plan is available.

HOLIDAYS: 14 per year: 11 recognized holidays and 3 floating days which are allocated for the fiscal year beginning October 1, to all 8 hour per day employees. Employees hired between October 1 and March 31 shall receive 3 floating holidays. Employees hired between April 1 and September 30 shall receive 1.5 floating holidays. Floating holidays must be used within the fiscal year. Non-task employees working 10-hour days receive 10, 10-hour paid holidays but do not receive floating holidays.

FUNERAL LEAVE: Up to 3 workdays - In State; Up to 5 workdays - Out of State

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: Full-time employees are eligible for tuition reimbursement as outlined in the City’s Tuition Reimbursement Policy which is available in Human Resources and subject to the availability of departmental funds.

MILITARY LEAVE: Members in military reserve units who attend annual training are entitled to paid leave not to exceed 30 days each calendar year.

EAP: Employees, spouses, and eligible dependents have access to five (5) face-to-face sessions with a counselor through Cigna's Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Services include assistance with legal, financial, parenting, elder care, pet care, and identity theft.
