Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a System Administrator or Senior to join our Information Technology team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon, and we’re working hard to safely provide our customers with the reliable, affordable, clean energy they depend on. While this position is based at Idaho Power’s downtown Boise location, we offer both flexible schedules and the opportunity to work up to 40% remote.

What does a Network System Administrator do for us?

The Network System Administrator analyzes, installs, configures, upgrades, tests, documents, monitors, and maintains network systems, software, and hardware in support of business and security requirements. Supported systems may include network routing and switching systems, wireless systems, firewall systems, security tools, compliance tools, VPN administration, monitoring systems, Voice Over IP (VOIP) systems, and other departmental or enterprise applications as needed.

This position works closely with both IT and business subject matter experts to support the corporate network and critical systems within Idaho Power. This position is expected to split time between ongoing run support tasks (approximately 70%) and time spent on new projects and automation (30%).

The role of a Network Systems Administrator performs the following critical support functions:

  • Installs, upgrade, tests, monitors, tunes, documents, and maintains network connectivity and security systems with its associated hardware and software in accordance with established IT policies and procedures.

  • Participates on various project teams to ensure connectivity needs are met.

  • Configures, supports, and maintains VPN systems which have become increasing critical as we focus more on security and cloud solutions.

  • Administers cloud computing firewalls, authorization policies, internal security access systems, and the wireless network.

  • Consults with business units, third parties, and other IT Teams with planning designing, configuring, and supporting enterprise level solutions.

  • Provides regular and periodic patching & maintenance of support applications and hardware within the team.

  • Participates on root cause analysis, troubleshooting techniques in support of problem management.

A Network Senior System Administrator will also:

Participate in the development and execution of technology strategies to support organizational activities and direction. They will provide advanced level support for systems, including troubleshooting, performance, monitoring, cost-benefit, security, and licensing analysis. This individual will stay aware of industry trends, business requirements, and technical design methodologies to aid in the development of creative/innovative IT/OT solutions.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • Installation, configuration, upgrade, test, document, monitor and maintain network related software and hardware of relevant technology platform(s)

  • Expertise in setting up VPN and remote access technologies

  • Wide area network setup and support

  • Network routing and switching

  • Firewall technologies

  • Wireless installations, configuration, and administration

  • Setup and management of Internet communications

  • Quality of Service (QOS)

  • Voice over IP (VOIP)

  • IP address management or IPAM

  • Network configuration management, or NCM

  • Various agent and non-agent based monitoring systems

Preferred:

  • Scripting languages such as PowerShell or Python

  • Cloud environment administration

Skills in:

  • Problem solving

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Verbal and written communication, including effective listening

  • Planning and organizing

Preferred:

  • Basic project management practices

  • Cyber security nomenclature and practices

  • Troubleshooting and testing

Ability to:

  • Work proactively in a team environment with minimum supervision, accept responsibility and complete tasks in a timely manner

  • Interact effectively with both technical and non-technical personnel

  • Adapt to new situations, and maintain a positive, customer-focused attitude

Preferred:

  • Work on multiple projects at a time with frequent interruptions

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

System Administrator:

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field

OR

  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or a related field

Experience:

  • 2 or more years relevant technology administration experience

Preferred:

  • 4 or more years relevant technology administration experience

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

Preferred:

  • Certification relevant to position, Palo Alto Certified Network Security Administrator (PCNSA), Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP), etc.

Senior System Administrator:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, CIS (Computer Information Systems) or equivalent field

OR

  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, CIS (Computer Information Systems), Cyber Security or a related field

Experience:

  • 5 or more years of professional technology administration experience

Preferred:

  • 8 or more years of experience in a corporate multi-platform technology environment

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

  • Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA)

Preferred:

  • Certification relevant to position, i.e. Palo Alto Certified Network Security Administrator (PCNSA), Microsoft Azure Administrator, Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position. Participate in 24x7 on call rotation.
