[Responsibilities: Maskers perform an integral part in the coating application process providing attention to detail and cosmetic finish masking and unmasking. Maskers will prepare parts for coatings as per the customer specification or print. The masker must be able to identify the proper materials used for the appropriate coating as well as determine the area for masking. Once the coatings have been applied the maskers must perform visual inspection of the parts prior to unmasking them and identify issues. The maskers at times may also be asked to perform other duties outside of their designation such as preparing parts for coatings as well as racking for coatings. Work Activities Maskers perform a decorative finish masking that requires the ability to interpret a customer specification and or blueprint. Once the correct masking has been identified the masker must select the correct material to use for masking and properly measure, cut, plug, or mask the surface. Cleaning standards are different for each customer and must be taken into consideration. Once the masking has been accomplished the parts must be hung or packaged to prevent damage to the coating operation. It is common for masking to use calipers, templates, die cuts, and manual cut tapes. The masking must be removed after the coating application and requires the masker to visually inspect the parts for defect or issues. Both operations masking and unmasking presents a cut hazard and maskers must use caution.
