The Interventional Cardiology and Vascular Research Section at the Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Center for Outcomes Research at BIDMC is seeking a Biostatistician II.  The Smith Center (Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Center for Outcomes Research https://smithcenter.bidmc.org/ ) is devoted to addressing the most pressing issues in cardiovascular care through innovative and rigorous analysis of data sources, including large national registries, administrative claims data, survey-based data, and EHR data. The Biostatistician II will engage in a variety of collaborative research projects working closely with clinician investigators, fellow statisticians, administrative staff, and trainees in the nationally recognized Section for Interventional Cardiology and Vascular Research. As a Biostatistician II you will have a key role in helping to produce high-impact research.

The Biostatistician II will carry out select data management and analytic activities for a variety of projects in support of the Interventional Cardiology and Vascular Research Section at the Smith Center for Outcomes Research under the direction of Dr. Eric Secemsky. In addition to traditional biostatistical methods (e.g., regression, propensity score approaches, survival analyses), prior experience with administrative (Medicare) claims data is preferred. Additional preferred qualifications include SAS Base and Advanced certification, hands-on experience working with SAS (Base, Stat, Macro, SQL), and domain knowledge in at least one of the following areas: causal inference, longitudinal analysis, or weighting methods.

The Interventional Cardiology and Vascular Research section (https://research.bidmc.org/eric-secemsky ) focuses on using real-world data to perform comparative effectiveness and outcomes research, with a concentration on the treatment of peripheral vascular disorders. Research has centered on drug delivery, intravascular imaging, antithrombotic therapy, renal denervation, and pulmonary embolism intervention, with an emphasis on the use of novel statistical methods and risk prediction models to guide treatment.  Research in this section is funded by various grants including: the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and other extramural funding. Dr. Secemsky’s section regularly produces and publishes research in high-impact journals such as JAMA, Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.  

Job Description:

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the design, development and maintenance of data collection instruments, databases and procedure manuals. Designs, implements, and performs data management and quality control procedures as necessary for routine and special projects.

  • Writes computer programs to combine data from separate computer files to allow comparison of data from different sources. Support the creation applications in support of research projects.

  • Collaborates with program staff on the design and analysis of biostatistics aspects of research protocols. Participates in the design of questionnaires and interview forms.

  • Analyzes data beginning with univariate and multivariate analyses such as logistic regression and factor analysis for research studies. Supports the interpretation and assist in the creation of study results in collaboration with faculty members, epidemiologists, biostatisticians and other team members.

  • Provides tabular and graphic summaries of analyses in a form suitable for inclusion in manuscripts for publication in peer reviewed scientific journals as well as for presentation at scientific meetings

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics or related field required.

  • 3-5 years related work experience required.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with software programs including SAS, Access, Powerpoint, Epi Info and Excel.

  • Ability to conduct and interpret multivariable regression analysis.

  • Documented ability to manipulate complex, large databases including Medicare and other insurance claims data.

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access and other web-based applications. May produce complex documents, perform analysis and maintain databases.

Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally in carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling objects. Sitting most of the time, with walking and standing required only occasionally.
