Job Description:

Job Summary: Provides genetic counseling to patients regarding hereditary syndromes. Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues. Serves as a resource to physicians, staff, and other genetic counselors regarding genetic issues.

Essential Responsibilities:

Counsels patients and families concerning genetic issues which typically involves genetic or other testing. Interviews and evaluates patients' medical and genetic information. Recommends and coordinates additional testing and referrals.

Provides extensive patient contact; explains procedures and risks, aids with decision-making, and provides psychosocial counseling as needed and follow-up.

Maintains appropriate records including patient information, progress notes and charts, statistics, and encounter forms. Provides summary letters and other necessary documentation to referring providers and patients.

Serves as resource to patients, providers, residents, and others regarding genetic counseling issues.

Works directly and meets regularly with administrative management and Medical Director regarding the genetics counseling program.

Maintains current knowledge regarding trends and developments in the field of genetics from multiple professional sources. Attends genetics conferences and presentations.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling in progress and degree completed prior to start date required.

0-1 years related work experience required.

Provisional Genetic Counselor License required prior to start date.

Full Genetic Counselor License required with 6 months of employment.

Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Independence of Action: Ability to set goals and determines how to accomplish defined results with some guidelines. Manager/Director provides broad guidance and overall direction.

Written Communications: Ability to summarize and communicate in English moderately complex information in varied written formats to internal and external customers.

Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and communicate complex verbal information in English to medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.

Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of concepts, practices and policies with the ability to use them in complex varied situations.

Team Work: Ability to work collaboratively in small teams to improve the operations of immediate work group by offering ideas, identifying issues, and respecting team members.

Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Age based Competencies:

Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.

Physical Nature of the Job:

Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally in carrying, lifting, pushing, pulling objects. Sitting most of the time, with walking and standing required only occasionally
