Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Manager, Translational Research Data Curation in Boston, Massachusetts
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Research Informatics Operations (RIO) Manager of Translational Research Data Curation will lead and support clinical and research data design and curation activities. RIO is a subdivision of the DFCI Informatics and Analytics (I&A) department, led by the Chief Data and Analytics Officer (CDAO) of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). RIO supports oncology clinical research informatics systems for the DF/HCC member institutions and provides other research data services and tools for DFCI.
The Manager, Translational Research Data Curation will provide management and direction for the collection and use of structured and unstructured real-world data (RWD), and support development of systems that house and disseminate clinical phenotypic data (including cancer diagnoses, treatments, and outcomes) to complement genomic data. The resulting combination of clinical and genomic data supports DFCI’s recognized excellence and leadership in precision medicine, outcomes research, clinical trials research, enterprise data sharing initiatives, and operations. The Manager will be expected to successfully lead multiple concurrent projects, monitor business metrics, and manage other employees both indirectly and directly.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participates in DFCI clinical data design strategy, visioning, and development activities.
Works in conjunction with RIO leadership, key research faculty, informatics staff, and data curation core staff to develop and implement informatics strategies to increase the capture and access to meaningful clinical data and outcomes from Real World Data (RWD).
Creates and monitors key business metrics including data curation and delivery requests and other service requests.
Manages inter-related patient data acquisition projects focusing on real-world data from structured and unstructured data from EMR, operational systems, curation systems, other sources (e.g. National Death Index) ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and quality data sets for machine learning initiatives.
Supports data quality efforts and serves as key member of data quality team by contributing clinical and research subject matter expertise.
Collaborates with the Informatics technical directors of Translational Research, Product Strategy, Research Data Governance, Customer Experience, Clinical Operations and Business Analytics, Bioinformatics, Software Engineering, and Solutions Architecture to ensure seamless customer support of data curation informatics solutions, including new implementations and support of existing curation products, such as REDCap, InForm and internal platforms.
Supports DFCI enterprise-level manual curation projects including, OncoPanel Annotation Project, AACR Project GENIE, NCI Human Tumor Atlas, and NCI Human Tumor Model Initiatives. Duties include:
Oversees the development and maintenance of the following:
DFCI catalog of universal research data elements for solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.
research clinical data model supporting data from operational systems, curation systems, NLP, and other sources.
documentation about DFCI data assets including key structured and unstructured clinical data, definitions, provenance, data standards, and data quality.
Enhances DFCI EDW solid tumor and hematologic oncology clinical data by defining algorithms that combine data from diagnoses, imaging reports, pathology reports, medication exposures, laboratory data, and NLP initiatives.
Implements use of data standards including provenance, terminologies, and ontologies in research data.
Collaborates with internal groups, including Knowledge Systems Group (KSG) on clinical data standards.
Provides informatics support to the data curation core, including supporting projects.
Coordinates Informatics teams and activities related to ongoing development of the in-house Solid Tumor and Hematologic Oncology Data Curation Platforms, including gathering stakeholder feedback, interacting with product management teams, participating in agile development, and training curation staff.
Ensures incorporation of research data model and universal data elements into the Solid Tumor PRISSMM and Hematologic Oncology Platform.
Develops design and validation plans of patient clinical and genomic data fields for curation.
Provides guidance to the Research Data Sciences team developing Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithm for incorporation in the curation platform.
Works with direct reports, DFCI and I&A department management and the respective institutional Human Resources staff to ensure all staff are being appropriately informed, supported, trained, guided, and evaluated. Provides clear channels of communication, delegation, and accountability within the team for effective direction and problem-solving.
Continually reassesses the allocation of staffing resources to meet the changing needs of both the staff and organization. Performs all other functions which constitute proper supervision of staff under his/her direction.
Represents DFCI in the Clinical Data Committee and Operations Committee for AACR Project GENIE.
Manages participation in the Curation Working Group for AACR Project GENIE’s Biopharmaceutical Consortium (BPC) with duties including data model, data element requirements and data curation processes.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages 4 - 6 direct and indirect reports.
Assumes site and administrative responsibilities in absence of Associate Director of RIO, as needed.
PATIENT CONTACT:
No patient contact; occasional travel to patient care areas.
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business, Biology, Informatics, Public Health, Epidemiology, or other relevant area; Master’s degree preferred
5 years of direct analytical work experience in a client facing role in healthcare, public health, epidemiology, informatics, information services, or another closely related field
3 years of experience developing and managing budgets
Experience managing resources (directly or indirectly) across complex domains and functions, and leading cross-functional teams
Experience with the design, development, and implementation of sophisticated information systems, especially with large-scale relational systems
Experience with the National Cancer Institute (NCI) preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Strong demonstrated ability to develop formal and informal networks and collaborative working relationships across multidisciplinary specialties and sites of care. Ability to assess, embrace and leverage institutional cultural and knowledge strengths will be important to success.
Knowledge and experience with biospecimen banking and outcomes research.
Knowledge of, or exposure to, biomedical informatics.
Proven ability to manage multiple levels of staff and projects in both a direct and matrix reporting environment.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all levels of organization, most notably with high senior level executives and senior scientists and investigators.
Exhibits strong professional and proficient persona and brings a passion to improving informatics solutions to the clinical trials research world.
Demonstrated expertise in achieving consensus in highly charged arenas.
Excellent record of successfully solving complex problems across diverse departments and domains.
