State of Massachusetts Nurse Supervisor (Evening) - RN IV in Boston, Massachusetts

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking an experienced and dynamic registered nurse to serve as dedicated Evening Nurse Supervisor for the safe and effective provision of nursing care. The Registered Nurse IV Evening Supervisor provides direct and indirect supervision over care and treatment of patients from the community, DPH, DOC, DMH, and DDS in accordance with hospital policies and practices on evening shift. The incumbent coordinates intra and interdepartmental activities and performs related duties as directed. /_Hours:_/The hours are 3-11:30PM Evening Shift (40 Hours). Full-Time Position. Incumbents work every other weekend day, and days off are assigned. /_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_/// * /Supervise and coordinate patient care for community, DPH, DOC, DMH, and DDS patients during evening shifts./ * /Review and evaluate patient assessments, nursing care plans, and documentation to maintain 24-hour continuity of care./ * /Communicate patient care status to supervisory personnel through inter-shift reports, ensuring compliance with professional standards./ * /Collaborate with the Nurse Manager on employee performance reviews for 3-11 shift employees./ * /Act as a resource for coordinating hospital services with community and departmental agencies./ * /Attend administrative nursing meetings and communicate information to staff./ * /Consult with Nurse Manager and Staffing Coordinator on appropriate staffing levels; authorize overtime as necessary and complete fiscal reports./ * /Ensure staff attendance at educational programs scheduled during evening shifts./ * /Oversee overtime costs within the nursing department budget./ * /Pursue continuing education and professional development through conferences, seminars, and workshops./ * /Report emergencies and special occurrences to appropriate administrative personnel on call./ * /Conduct activities related to admissions, medical records, central supply, pharmacy, and morgue./ * /Direct equipment repair, ensure return of equipment to designated locations, check safety conditions, and oversee medical supplies./ * /Oversee IV/Phlebotomy activities during off shifts./ * /Provide culturally and spiritually sensitive care./ * /Demonstrate competence in Meditech and act as a super user in the absence of the Informatics Specialist./ * /Ensure continuity of care by following hand-off communication policies./ * /Ensure appropriate staffing levels based on census and acuity./ * /Assist nursing units to maintain appropriate levels of care./ * /Serve as a patient advocate by investigating complaints and making necessary staffing or logistical adjustments./ * /Act as hospital administrator during off shifts, including disaster command center duties./ * /Lead medical emergencies (Code Blues/RRTs) and ensure proper staff roles and documentation./ * /Understand and apply collective bargaining policies related to staffing./ /_Required Qualifications:_/// * /Apply supervision and leadership skills effectively./ * /Communicate clearly with staff and other disciplines; write accurate reports./ * /Motivate staff and remain calm in stressful situations./ * /Initiate and direct performance improvement (PI) programs per Joint Commission standards./ * /Lead cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and advanced life-saving measures./ * /Gather information through observation, interviews, and record examination./ * /Exercise sound judgment./ * /Explain laws, regulations, policies, and procedures governing agency operations./ * /Implement interventions for special client groups (mentally, physically, emotionally handicapped)./ * /Understand principles and practices of supervision./ * /Interact positively and establish rapport with diverse social, ethnic, and economic groups./ /_Preferred Qualifications:_/// * /Evaluate nursing practice methods effectively./ * /Apply principles and practices of health care administration./ * /Explain laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing unit activities./ * /Interact positively with individuals from diverse social, ethnic, and religious backgrounds./ * /Understand laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards governing agency and unit activities./ /_About the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital:_/ Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity. Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. A Graduate degree with a major in Nursing may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.* No substitutions will be allowed for the required (B) experience. Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines.
