Position Summary:

The Executive Director, Safety Center of Excellence (COE) is a critical leadership role responsible for designing and implementing the company's safety strategy. This position will develop, enhance, and oversee safety systems, programs and tools, providing technical leadership across all areas of safety for BMS. The role requires expert counsel to improve global safety, to support both operations and capital projects. The Executive Director will lead a global team of technical experts, deploying capabilities and personnel to support a global network of research, commercial, and manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive strategies, roadmaps, and execution frameworks to drive company safety priorities.

  • Engage and influence colleagues at all levels, across all Divisions, to foster a culture of safety and compliance within the organization.

  • Lead through complex and ambiguous technical challenges from a safety perspective.

  • Lead and manage a team of technical safety subject matter experts (PSM, Bio, IH, Ergonomics, High Hazard Risk etc) to enable contemporary, risk based, solutions to challenging scenarios.

  • Lead and/or support critical safety related investigations, ensuring root cause identification and action planning.

  • Consistently develop industry leading programs to maintain a robust and vibrant safety culture across BMS.

  • Ensure operations comply with regulatory and company standards.

  • Own technical safety content of company standards and design guidance.

  • Stay current with contemporary and evolving safety approaches

  • Lead advocacy work with key stakeholder groups and facilitate benchmarking to ensure programs remain contemporary and effective.

  • Provide expert knowledge on safety risks across the corporation and maintain appropriate assessment, governance and escalation processes to ensure leadership and the wider organization are focused on appropriate priorities.

  • Attract, develop, and build high-performing teams.

  • Drive accountability across all functions to eliminate accidents and injuries, managing programs to achieve high engagement and ownership at the employee level.

  • Maintain knowledge of key global frameworks for safety.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred. Certification through an accredited organization (e.g., PE, CIH, CSP, CHMM, CIA, ISO-LEAD, CQE, ASCE-sustainability, Six Sigma certification).

  • Minimum 12 years relevant experience.

  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage and influence colleagues at all levels.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, ability to resolve problems in ambiguous situations and align stakeholders on business outcomes and path to achieve.

  • Extensive experience in technical safety performance disciplines, familiarity with contemporary safety solutions/best practices and knowledge of global safety regulations and trends.
