Brief Position Overview

Academic Advisors provide vital advising services for students and work closely with advisors in Advising Commons as well as faculty and staff in the departments/colleges they serve. Academic advisors play a critical role in supporting students with the goal of increasing student retention and timely degree completion.

Position Details

General Statement

Advising Commons Academic Advisors advise students in all colleges. We are currently seeking candidates to advise students within these programs:

  • College of Engineering (https://coe.montana.edu/)

  • Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing

  • College of Letters and Science (https://www.montana.edu/lettersandscience/)

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide in-depth, specialized, and/or comprehensive advising to faculty and students regarding class choices, curriculum options, majors, departmental and University policies and procedures, and other academic needs.

  • Provide academic advising for entering freshmen, transfer and transitioning students

  • Advise continuing students in program to facilitate their academic progression toward degree

  • Have in-depth understanding of curricula in area of advising focus

  • Possess general knowledge of supporting coursework and curricula, and how to connect students to minors, certificates and programs to ‘add value’ to degrees (Study Abroad, student organizations, etc.)

  • Maintain positive connections with faculty and staff in focus area to facilitate student connections

  • Understand resources at MSU for student services, tutoring, health and wellness, etc.

  • Participate in Orientation advising and registration activities

  • Meet with prospective students and parents visiting campus, participate in MSU Fridays and other recruiting activities

  • Coordinate communication of information related to important dates, deadlines and procedures to advisees and faculty and staff within the academic unit(s) served

  • Utilize advising and registration software and keep records of student advising interactions

  • Performs other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Academic Advisor I

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience

  • Demonstrated excellence in customer service and working with a diverse group of constituents

  • Demonstrated competence organizing and prioritizing multiple work assignments, meeting deadlines, and exercising adaptability to changing priorities while maintaining a positive, effective, and professional attitude.

  • Demonstrated competence maintaining records with a high degree of accuracy and close attention to detail

  • Academic Advisor II

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field with experience working with undergraduate college students in an academic or student support setting, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience

  • Experience working with undergraduate college students in an academic or student support setting

  • Demonstrated competence organizing and prioritizing multiple work assignments, meeting deadlines, and exercising adaptability to changing priorities while maintaining a positive, effective, and professional attitude

  • Demonstrated competence maintaining records with a high degree of accuracy and close attention to detail

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Academic Advisor I

  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education offices and resources that support student success

  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education curricula, policies, and procedures

  • Academic Advisor II

  • Master’s Degree in related field

  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education offices and resources that support student success

  • Background in the theory and practice of developmental academic advising

  • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education curricula, policies, and procedures

  • Experience working with enrollment and degree auditing software, such as DegreeWorks, CatCourse, Banner, MyInfo and/or relational database

    The Successful Candidate Will

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm to work with and guide students as they discover and attain their academic and life goals

  • Possess the ability to create positive rapport and strong working relationships with colleagues throughout the MSU community, to include: administrators, faculty, staff, other professional advisors and student support professionals

  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills

  • Possess the ability to troubleshoot problems and have candid conversations.

  • Experience and awareness of how to manage and maintain confidential information

  • Have proven ability to work independently and in a team environment.

  • Have the ability to represent the department, college and university in a professional and courteous manner

  • Actively pursue training and professional development opportunities.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
