Position Details
General Statement
The Department of Microbiology & Cell Biology ( MCB ) has strong research programs in cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, microbial pathogenesis, and cell biology supported by state-of-the-art core facilities. Pathogen-containment facilities that accommodate small ( BSL -3 & BSL -2) and large ( ABSL -2) animal research are also available. The Department is part of the College of Agriculture and is a component of the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station ( MAES ). MCB is the primary department at MSU providing pre-medical and pre-veterinary training. The department is home to the Montana Medical Laboratory Science Professional Program, and our faculty participate in both the WWAMI Medical Education Program and the WIMU Regional Program in Veterinary Medicine. The department contributes significantly to MSU’s Center for Biofilm Engineering.
Duties and Responsibilities
Research Responsibilities:
Mastery of molecular cloning techniques (Gibson Assembly, Restriction enzyme cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, etc.).
Protein expression and purification from both bacterial and mammalian cells.
Mammalian tissue culture techniques, including lentiviral preparations.
Biochemical assays related to protein activity validation and quantification, including work with radioactive materials.
Laboratory Responsibilities:
Purchasing laboratory supplies and equipment.
Familiarity with university procurement policies and resources (Chrome River, MSU SmartBuy).
Maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment, including minor to moderate repairs when appropriate.
Ensuring compliance with university guidelines, including Biosafety Protocols and Radioactive Material Protocols.
Appropriate waste disposal (biohazard, chemical, radioactive, etc.).
Additional Responsibilities:
Budgeting and managing laboratory finances.
Quarterly budget projection meetings with the Principal Investigator (PI).
Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Structural or Molecular biology.
Postdoc experience in antiviral defense.
Evidence of publishing in peer reviewed journals.
Evidence of mentoring students and postdocs.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
Prior experience in lab management.
