Brief Position Overview

The Center for Biofilm Engineering ( CBE ) invites applications for a full-time lab manager to oversee the day-to-day management of the Gerlach and Phillips labs. The employee will also be performing research (experiments, data analysis, data presentation, report writing, etc.) in biotechnology research.

General Statement

Montana State University’s Center for Biofilm Engineering has been a world leader in biofilm research for more than 25 years. A prestigious 11-year National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center grant awarded in 1990 paved the way for the CBE’s influence in the emerging field of biofilm research. The Center’s three-fold emphasis in research, education, and industry continues to produce results and exciting opportunities for students, staff, and faculty—as well as industrial partners. In the years since the end of the NSF - ERC grant, the CBE has relied on three main sources of funding. CBE researchers continue to be awarded competitive grants from a variety of sources including DoE, EPA , NSF , NIH , NASA , INL , the State of Montana. The CBE’s Industrial Associates program provides key support for CBE research and operations, as well as valuable input that keeps CBE research relevant. The prospective employee will be responsible for pursuing funding sources for the CBE and for creating/maintaining liaisons with prospective industrial backers.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing and implementing research plans, including methods development and assistance in managing personnel.

  • Oversee daily laboratory operation, ordering, and maintenance.

  • Preparing periodic progress reports and presentations for research projects.

  • Developing research proposals to acquire funding from private and government agencies.

  • Supervising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students involved in research projects.

  • Preparing written documents related to the research for the purpose of reporting, publication, outreach, and technology transfer.

  • Training new employees, students, and visitors in laboratory best practices.

  • Maintaining laboratory inventories and coordinating laboratory inspections.

    Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in either an engineering or science field or an equivalent amount of education/experience.

  • Working knowledge of applied environmental microbiology.

  • Working knowledge of biofilm reactor operation.

  • Proven ability to manage projects, including: (1) conducting research in the laboratory, (2) research scheduling and financial management, (3) maintaining laboratory organization and safety, and (4) supervision of staff and/or students.

    Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Familiarity with microbially induced mineral precipitation and dissolution.
