Mechanic I

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under general supervision, the purpose of this position is to perform skilled work involving the maintenance and repair of gasoline and/or diesel driven motors and related auto equipment, machinery and tools. Also performs maintenance and repairs on City Garage and grounds. Employee functions at entry level to perform routine work with considerable independence, and more difficult work under direct guidance and supervision of a senior Mechanic.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.   • Performs routine overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and medium trucks, mechanical equipment and other gasoline and diesel driven motors; inspects, repairs, welds, fabricates and replaces automobile and equipment body parts.
  • Maintains, adjusts, repairs, rebuilds and overhauls operating systems including, but not limited to, electrical, charging, starting, fuel, ignition, cooling and heating systems, suspension, braking and steering systems, engines, transmissions, drive shafts, differentials, radiators and bodies.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and tunes and adjusts engines and electrical systems.
  • Removes, repairs and replaces component parts or assembles automotive systems.
  • Services and repairs brake systems; tests and repairs electrical equipment, generators, distributors, magnetos and starters.
  • Repairs and replaces valves; pistons; main bearings; cooling, fuel and exhaust systems; transmissions; front and rear axles and hydraulic controls.
  • Maintains cleanliness of garage facilities and equipment; completes general maintenance and repairs.
  • Operates various diagnostic, repair and pneumatic tools utilized in auto-repair; operates drill press, welder, torch and band saw.
  • Operates vehicles into and out of service bays to perform road tests.
  • Schedules repairs, preventative maintenance and servicing of automotive equipment.
  • Maintains repair orders and maintenance records of time spent, materials, parts used and type of work performed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED; supplemented by one (1) year of experience in automotive and heavy equipment/machinery maintenance and repair; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must possess a valid, current commercial driver's License.
  • Excellent work history and attendance record.
  • Highly skilled in fabrication and metal repairs, as well as mechanical and electrical repair.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS The following is intended to provide a general sense of the work environment and physical demands that may be required of the position:

  • Must be able to speak and hear clearly.
  • Must be able to grasp and feel objects in order to operate tools, equipment and machinery.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, reach, crouch, and kneel regularly in order to manage tools, equipment and inventory.
  • May work in confined spaces.
  • Works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to loud noises.
  • Exposed to vibration, mechanical oils and fumes, as well as potentially hazardous chemicals.
