Overview
The New York Public Library is a free provider of education and information for the people of New York and beyond. With 92 locations—including research and branch libraries—throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, the Library offers free materials, computer access, classes, exhibitions, programming and more to everyone from toddlers to scholars, and has seen record numbers of attendance and circulation in recent years. The Facilities department is tasked with keeping all NYPL locations safe, clean, comfortable and welcoming for our patrons and staff. The Operations Supervisor provides direction to a team of 10 - 14 custodians and coordinates the day to day cleaning operations of the Library buildings in an assigned network. This includes organizing, distributing and verifying the work of the custodial/porter staff and participating in their training. They also perform custodial duties, if necessary.
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own :
All aspects of cleaning operations in a neighborhood library network.
Supervision of the performance of assigned Facilities staff
Completion of building audits to ensure compliance with accepted Library standards
Staff scheduling; assign and inspect work to assure the highest quality results
Grow:
- Staff skills and knowledge in cleaning methods and techniques, and on the use of chemicals and machinery
Learn:
How the Facilities Department interacts with other divisions and departments
How to improve critical work functions and efficiencies in operations

- The ability of NYPL to provide Library Patrons and Staff with a safe and welcoming environment
Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month , this person will:
Understand how the library is organized and physically laid out
Understand the specific goals and role of the Facilities Operations team in relation to other departments
Know their departmental contacts
Perform daily building inspections
3 months , this person will:
Provide direction, motivation and set an example through open communication and modeling best practices. Demonstrate ability to motivate others to meet a common goal; and, recognize and effectively leverages employees’ skills and abilities.
Provide meaningful and appropriate advice, on-going feedback, support and resources to improve effectiveness of individuals and teams. Address performance problems in an appropriate and timely manner.
6 months and beyond , this person will:
Train custodial staff on proper techniques and procedures for Cleaning Operations
Perform inspections and assessments independently
Meet the expectations of internal and external customers.Listen and respond effectively to customer questions; resolve customer problems to the customer’s satisfaction; respect all internal and external customers.
Support a positive team environment in which members participate, respect and cooperate with each other to receive desired results.
Plans, prioritizes, and organizes work effectively to produce measurable results; keeps current with and effectively applies new work methods, skills and technologies to complete work.
Responsibilities
Supervises the performance of custodial/porter staff and conducts building audits to ensure compliance with accepted Library standards.
Schedules staff, assigns and inspects work to assure the highest quality results
Organizes snow removal, grounds maintenance and site specific tasks, oversees special assignments and determines crew sizes, and ensures projects are competed in a timely manner
Tracks inventory levels at assigned buildings and replenishes supplies as needed
Oversees implementation of schedules for daily and periodic services and resolves scheduling problems
Maintains ongoing communication with Library managers and staff to determine needs
Must be available to respond to emergencies after hours. Emergency response to weather events and systems failures; organize snow removal, grounds maintenance and site specific tasks
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
HS Diploma or equivalent, and a strong background in building cleaning or equivalent combination education and experience
Valid driver’s license and a clear driving record
Required Experience
- 3 plus years of successfully demonstrated supervisory experience
Required Skills
Demonstrated knowledge of industry standard cleaning methods and procedures, materials safety handling, and experience ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment
Successful demonstrated ability to perform manual work consisting of cleaning, heavy lifting, and working from high ladders and scaffolds
Must be able to communicate with staff, management at all levels and outside vendors/ contractors
Good interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills including demonstrating the ability to work well with Library staff at all levels
Must be able to work flexible schedules and perform operational duties in an emergency
Must pass physical examination
Preferred Qualifications
Some college education
Knowledge of mixing chemicals to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
